“A perfect Winter's break!”
Reviewed 16 December 2011

We stayed in the Renvyle House Hotel for 2 nights at the beginning of December. It was the most perfect experience! From the beginning, the warm welcoming fires in the lobby helped us to immediately unwind following a 2 and a half hour journey with 3 very restless kids.

The setting is sublime – and as my brother (who stayed there this time last year) had told me: it’s a place where you want the weather to be cold and wintry so that you can go for your energizing walk and come back and get ready for your delicious evening meal.

The staff were faultless – friendly yet discreet. The food was both copious and delicious. The setting was like a fairy-tale with mountain backdrops and a wild sea crashing against the rocks. The bedrooms we stayed in were large, exceptionally clean and the bathroom was tiled in what seemed like Connemara marble. The shower was amazingly powerful.

Our children loved it – they especially loved playing croquet and feeding the ducks (a very kind staff member filled a bag of bread to give to them)

I haven’t stopped raving about the Renvyle House Hotel since our return … and I was so surprised to learn of the amount of family and friends who had stayed there already and couldn’t wait to return. It is a well-guarded secret.

I and my husband stayed for 3 nights at the Renvyle House Hotel at the beginning of November. We were surprised to see the Hotel almost full at this time of year and delighted with the warm and friendly atmosphere. Excellent public areas to relax, read etc. with lovely turf fires. We found the staff to be very competent and friendly. The location is stunning with the most wonderful scenery; and walks not only in the Hotel grounds but the adjacent and other nearby beaches. The food was first class with an excellent choice in the Dining Room and at breakfast – well deserves its reputation! Our room was very comfortable and we were delighted that the Hotel was able to accommodate our 2 dogs – most important to us. We visited Kylemore Abbey and Connemara National Park – both within a 15 minute drive and again wonderful walks. Would have loved to have stayed longer and look forward to returning.

Like most of the 'honest' reviewers, the quality of food here in the Renvyle matches it's reputation as one of the best kitchens on the Country.

The Hotel is from another era, it's not trying to be 21st Century Las Vegas, it's very much relaxation west of Ireland style and you can't get much further west. It rained for most of the few nights we stayed, but hey we expected that.

Connemara marble bathrooms await in the olde fashioned bedrooms, which I believe are going to be updated in 2012. It was relatively mild for October when we arrived, but you can't avoid those peat fireplaces dotted around reception and the several lounge areas - a glass of whisky (Good selection of Scottish single malts) and a roaring peat fire can't be bettered!

Although I didn't find the staff went out of their way particularly at reception, they answered any queries we had and thankfully left us to our own devices.

I'd advise others to head over to Inishboffin for a treck on the ferry and a trak around the Island - although I was disappointed to see lessdefault Irish speakers around these parts as I'd have expected - sorry the modern Ireland has infliltrated so much.

To summarize - the location is excellent, food is excellent, you can chill out or explore - that's the thing here, it's your choice - I hope you make it soon.

We stayed in Renvyle House Hotel in May ,a present from my darling wife to celebrate my birthday, and very gratefully received and appreciated I can honestly say.The manager Ronnie is a brother of a good friend of mine and he was a splendid host, the hotel was very comfortable and the food was fabulous,we dined so well and breakfast was a tour de force.
We had such a good time that we returned in late October on one of our periodic visits to the west of Ireland, once again a wonderful stay.

We are back from a weekend of culinary excellence (and personal excess) in Renvyle House Hotel. I couldn't help myself. From kids tea in the playroom away from those that wanted a quieter dining experience our tots were treated to a feast with choices ranging from what we know they should eat to 5 star versions of what they wanted to eat. All the time being circled by hungry parents preying on scraps in anticipation of the main event in the dining room when kidies were tucked away in bed.

On Friday I went with Mussel Pie, tomato and basil soup, fillet of beef and crème brulee. One course better than the next and all at a comfortable pace. Saturday grazing started with a gentle paced one hour breakfast (never bored). The breakfast buffet choice was a little challenging following the previous night with good friends in bar. This was followed by eggs benedict and basically any combination of the long list of hot breakfast options one could create. After a morning of tennis, games, duck feeding and clay pigeon shooting we fortified ourselves with Renvyle Club sandwiches prior to taking on Diamond Hill in the Connemara National Park.

The walk laid the foundation for our appetites. The dining room was an energetic buzz of varied friends and family groups enjoying one another's company and feasting well following a fire works display for a guest celebrating their 100th birthday. My guess is that the full dining room had very few first time guests. It was a super comfortable atmosphere with 5 star food. Thank you to all in Renvyle for a wonderful weekend.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Renvyle House is a four star, historic country house, family owned and family run. It first opened as a hotel in 1883 and is spectacularly located on a 150 acre estate on the shores of the Wild Atlantic Way (midway point of the longest car touring route in the world!). Renvyle House is known for it’s “air of otherwordliness” which we believe is a strong and unique selling point and something of which we are very proud. Our emphasis is on customer service “friendly combined with professional” and we believe this plays a large part in why Renvyle enjoys over 55% repeat business. The hotel resort grounds include a private lake, a par 3 golf course, a beach, woodlands, gardens and numerous activities on site including tennis, croquet, outdoor heated swimming pool & Canadia Hot Tub which overlokks the Atlantic (summer months), fly-fishing, canoeing and more. Renvyle House is also well known for it’s good food and this is as much due to the locally sourced fresh produce (lamb, fish, vegetables and herbs from our own garden) as to Tim O’Sullivan’s expertise in the kitchen (Tim is our award winning Executive Chef). Renvyle House always has a warm welcome guaranteed for every guest. ... more   less
