Some fellow travellers encouraged us to visit this gallery during our stay in Stromness and we were so pleased they did. During our visit there was a special exhibition on paintings and photographs of Stromness, which was fascinating, as well as the permanent exhibition. Because of the friendship between the gallery's founder and Barbara Hepworth, there are a number of Hepworth drawings and sculptures as well as paintings from Ben Nicholson and others from St Ives.
The quality of the paintings on display are enhanced by the layout, which is light and airy with a large window looking out onto Stromness harbour.
And it is free! Definitely worth a visit.

We didn't know this was in Stromness and wandered in to get out of the drizzle. This is a fantastic attraction for anybody who is interested in or inspired by the arts, and it contains some excellent work by major modern artists such as Barbara Hepworth as well as great creative links to the Orkneys and Stromness. The architecture is great and allows for work to be set against background views of the harbour as well as sitting elswhere in well planned spaces. Well worth an hour of your time

Stromness is a delightful place to visit with it's strong fishing heritage, scenic streets and lanes plus a layer of literary and artistic endeavours. With the latter in mind we entered the unassuming entrance of the Pier Arts Centre. The building is an interesting mixture of traditional and modern architecture making good use of both natural and artificial light. There is a strong link to the artistic community in St Ives with works by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Alfred Wallis on view.
The gallery is small enough to be viewed on one visit but we returned on a later day to both review and explore the collection further. In all, we can fully recommend a visit to this outstanding venue as part of an Orkney itinerary.

I love this place. The building is a marvel - design is super and so many surprising views of the outside - turn the building itself into art. The collections - excellent local artists, and others. A open research room filled with voids and comfortable tables and chairs. A video was running. You can view anything you choose and help yourself.
There is a gift shop with quality items as well.

I can't share photos of art for copyright reasons. This photos are of the outside, taken from inside.
