If you're visiting Brodgar and Stennes, then you're already a fan, so make sure to see this ancient village.

Part of the world Heritage site Barnhouse is the remains of a village which they think played a part in the rituals that took place at the stones of Stenness and the Ring Of Brodgar

This site is a bit out of the way mainly because while there is a path from the Stones of Stenness it's not heavily labeled or promoted. You just have to keep meandering down the path and past a farm, watch out for sheep poop by the way.
It's a wonderful discovery! It's similar, though not as well preserved, to Skara Brae. You can walk through these vestiges of history though and that makes it a very different experience.
Plus if you continue a bit further down the path you come to an almost hidden bird watching hide! There's a book of sightings and some pencils in a Tupperware container which you can add any sightings you have to as well!

Barnhouse is located close to the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar. It contains the remains of several houses and adds to the story you have have begun to put together at the Stones and the Ring.

Anyone with an interest in neolithic sites should not miss this! Interesting site just a few minutes walk from the Standing Stones of Stenness. Had someone at Maeshowe not told us about it, we would have never known about it.
