If you like meeting people as part of your holiday experience then Stromness is a good choice of town and the Hamnavoe Hostel in the centre of Stromness is a good choice of residence. It's a sparklingly bright, clean, white hostel overlooking the sea with a very relaxed atmosphere and low costs. Stromness itself was the home of George Mackay Brown, a very gifted writer and poet. It has a modern and interesting Art Gallery, convivial bars with a good chance of being entertained by local musicians, and friendly people who say hello to you and give you a smile and a nice sense of being visible! Certainly a place I'd go back to.

All the other reviews about the hostel are abslutely right. It really is very good, clean, decent, thick matresses (rare for somewhere offering real value for money) and a very pleasant kitchen and sitting room.
We arrived late on a Thursday (10pm by the time we got to the hostel) and George the proprietor happily came out, let us in and showed us our rooms.
As we were diving in Scapa Flow, we were usually pretty tired at the end of each day, and the hostel was quiet and we were always able to get a decent night's sleep.
Would strongly recommend Hamnavoe Hostel to anybody thinking of using it, and should we return to Orkney (which is great by the way!) we will definitely use it again.

Room Tip: The en-suite room was good value at an extra £2 per head!

This is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed at...and I've stayed at a lot. The living area and kitchen are bright and spacious, the rooms are private, every single room in the hostel was super clean, plus the wifi actually worked in the rooms which is rare for a hostel. Plus the owner is very accomodating and knows a lot about the area/Orkney Islands, and there is an extensive DVD and book collection as well as a TV to watch in the living room. Highly recommended!!!

Orkney is a wonderful place for a holiday, so much to see and do if you like the great outdoors. We were fortunate with the weather and had a very smoothe sail past the Old Man of Hoy, arriving in Stromness with that beautiful Summer twilight.
The people are wonderful and George operates a very clean and efficient Hostel and Apartments. We stayed in both, as well as a night in the Rackwick Bay Hostel which is a nice, wee modernised hostel on Hoy which we would recommend. Stromness is a great location to be based in too. Try a visit to the Barony Mills at Birsay and be entertained by the miller with the gift of the gab!
