Regular guided tours get you behind the fence and amongst the remaining buildings. Check the website for times.
Our tour guide was excellent, and there has clearly been some recent restoration work and effort spent.

We really enjoyed this guided tour. One of us is knowledgeable about artillery, the other (me) isn't but we both thought it great. The setting is fantastic. We walked out from Stromness- an easy flat walk of about 40 minutes through town and along the coast. Worth doing in its own right. Our guide, Andy, made the visit interesting from the start. He has the skill of bringing the site to life with enough information but also some human interest stories. His passion for the site is evident and infectious. He is well equipped with interesting old photos of the site but never goes on too long. The final part of the visit in the old mess hut was astonishing and something I know I will remember, think about and talk about. This is well worth doing even if you are not a military enthusiast. Easy to follow instructions on the website and Andy is very responsive to texts to confirm visit times.

A guided tour of the WW1 and WW2 Gun emplacement protecting Hoy Sound by Andrew who has been involved in the preservation of the Battery for a number of years. One of 20 plus coastal protection batteries built around Scapa this one is unique (I believe unique in the UK) in that is still retains some of the original WW2 wooden accommodation huts. The tour starts with a brief history of the defence of Scapa Flow, moves on to a close inspection of the gun emplacements finishing off in the Mess Hall with its painted walls depicting country village life in (probably) Kent. A definite 'must' for anyone visiting Orkney who is interested in Twentieth Century history and something a little different to the Neolithic and Viking that Orkney is perhaps better known for. The battery overlooks Hoy Sound and the views are stunning. The tour takes around 1hr so is easily fitted in at the end of a day of sightseeing.
As the tour is only an hour long and fair amount of that time is spent either in the gun emplacements or the huts, with good waterproof clothing it would be OK on a rainy day. All of the walking is on WW2 tarmac roads so no special footwear is needed.

I went to Orkney brewery and the guide there, Andy, was doing the battery tour straight after. I really enjoyed the insight into the history of the battery and life there during the war. Andy had great knowledge and presented the information really well. Great for adults and children.

The tour of the Ness Battery is illuminating regarding Orkney's involvement in WWII. There are many emplacements still standing and Andrew is able to give detail about what weaponry was used and how it was used. The mess hall was my favourite part.
