Other than its very pretty & the Prisoner was filmed here the village, in my opinion doesn’t offer something worthy of the £12pp entrance fee. Instead if you’re going to eat out anyway book into the restaurant here & arrive early for a wonder through the village.

Stayed at Priory Lodge in the grounds of Portmeirion village recently. The whole experience was magical. The room, the view, the grounds and the staff were all excellent. Had afternoon tea instead of an evening meal in the Hotel. Good call because, unlike dinner, it was very quiet and we had a choice of tables at which to sit to enjoy a stunning view across the estuary. Breakfast there was a lot busier, but great nevertheless.

We also ate at the hotel above, Castell Deudraeth. This was also excellent with a lovely huge coal fire and friendly, helpful staff. Definitely not to be missed.

Sincerely hope we get the chance to stay there again.

We turned up to spend the day here and were very surprised to find it was £12 per person entrance fee but we spotted that if we went for a meal at the hotel there were complementary tickets. As we were celebrating our 35 wedding anniversary we thought lunch would be nice but unfortunately we were not allowed with a dog, not even outside? To our a amazement we then found out that the whole place was doggist with no dogs allowed! We can understand shops or cafes refusing access maybe but could not believe we could not walk through the village or gardens with a small well behaved dog on a lead. The sign in the car park stating no dogs was horrible showing a picture of what looked like a savage dog ... ridiculous. What a large market you are missing out on by not allowing access to the village at all if you have a dog. We felt very angry and disappointed and very unwelcome but there are plenty of other places to visit who are friendly and happy for us to spend some time and money with them. Looking at a lot of the reviews though I don’t feel we have missed much.

We took a detour to Portmeirion on our way up to Anglesey as it was a place that we had wanted to go to for some time. Whilst it is interesting, it did not live up to the hype for us. The buildings are eclectic although they are all for holiday letting so can only be viewed from the outside. There is a pleasant walk down to the sea front, although the tide was in so there was no visible beach. We did eat lunch here which was nice. The whole place was quiet, building work happening to the main plaza both of which led to an underwhleming experience.
Maybe at a different time of year there would have been more of a buzz about the village and we would have been more enticed to do some of the walks through the surrounding woods or along the waterfront.

On looking online & at a tourist leaflet, I was expecting a little more than I found to be honest.
My thoughts are that the whole village could do with some TLC, it is very tired looking & whilst I could see that there was some gardening being done, the buildings looked very tired & in need of a spruce up. The colours are part of what make this place special & to be honest they are very faded & dirty looking :(
Going in late March, I would have expected everything to be open, however, a lot of the areas & shops, cafes were closed.
The walks were lovely & the food we ate in the main café was really nice & I must mention that the team there were all very friendly & helpful & genuinely seem happy in their work, it showed :)
