First of all, when we showed up at 3pm for check in no one was at the front desk for about 15 minutes. Odd. Admittedly we were disappointed by our room - although it's a perfectly lovely room we thought that we were getting a 'feature chamber', which made us think it would have a bit more of a castle feel to it.
We decided to check out the spa and WASN'T greeted by the very unenthusiastic girl at the reception, which made me ask if they were closed. "In 10 minutes" was her reply, but jeez you'd have thought I kicked her dog... It's possible to politely tell people you're almost closed!
The dinner at Bertie's was an incredibly disappointing experience. The waiter gave us out of date menus, didn't know what plate was which... The food was okay. Edible but not what I'd expect from what I thought was a luxury hotel.
I loved the castle and grounds. There were some impressive rooms to sit in. Walking around the grounds amongst the old ruins was fantastic.
It was a shame. Simple changes could make the hotel fantastic. I've seen it has had some great reviews... perhaps they put on a better service for the Americans that come in the summer? And don't really bother about the locals coming along for a winter package deal?More
