Arrived at 3.30pm and noted closing time of 4.00pm advertised on the door. Immediately after entering we were told that the coffee machine had been turned off as they were closing. Disappointing.

The Anglesea General Store with its eye-catching signage and dual purpose is located almost directly opposite the Anglesea Visitor Information Centre & is hands down one of the most impressive general produce / grocery stores we have come across. Let us explain why:

[ They seem to be committed to keeping plastic off our Coastline, Beaches & definitely out of our oceans ]:

Browsing through the substantially stocked shelves & display cases it quickly became apparent that a large portion of items followed the theme of being environmentally friendly, recycled & reusable. We were also impressed by the volume of locally grown, organic & fresh made goods & the fact that the Anglesea General Store appears to support many independent & small businesses didn't escape our attention either.

Such examples include, but are not limited to the 'Go Banboo' Range with items such as toothbrushes, cotton tips, clothes pegs & vegetable brushes - all non toxic & biodegradable.

Sustainable & reusable Beeswax food wraps, Paper Straws, fresh ground Fairtrade Coffee, Cheeky Goat Ice-cream, Paper Bags, Flyin Fox Ice Blox, Freshwater Creek Cakes, Apostle Way Milk, Otway Pasta and my personal favourite that I stop in for every time we are in the area, beverages from the Fairtrade, Organic "Karma Cola Company" - with Lemmy, Cola & Gingerella I get to keep every one in the family happy.

A colourful collection of reusable coffee cups is on display & this gift to the environment will keep on giving as management offer a saving of between 30 - 50 cents on a takeaway coffee to all persons whom bring in their own reusable cups when grabbing their coffee to go.

Of course no convenience store is complete without Lollies, Cakes, Chips & Biscuits all of which are here & again it seems many Organic & Vegan brands are stocked.
Facial scrubs, body scrubs, floor mats made from recycled straws, pet products, kitchen wares, flower pots and shadow-boxes make for great gifts.

The décor has been cleverly chosen to create a balance between the modern day needs of consumers whilst trying to bring in the type of old world charm reminiscent of corner stores with sawdust on the floors.

The Anglesea General Store is but one shop amongst hundreds of retail shops & Cafes that are situated throughout the length of the Great Ocean Road. So what makes this stand out?
For starters this convenience store really is just that, convenient. At one end of the scale offering Organic Compost from their own Kitchen Waste to the other being a selection of high end type gifts & souvenirs.
It is refreshing to discover a commercial enterprise that is seemingly making a concerted effort to make responsible business decisions in respects their global footprint & our family for one are more than willing to support a company in such an endeavour.
Maybe after you stop by your family will too?

The café referred to is situated on the same property & is called the 'Maids Pantry Brunch Bar' - you can find it listed separately on TripAdvisor. A review of the café will be added separately under that cover.

Stopped off for lunch on our way to the Ocean Road. Interesting variety of breads and cakes and extremely friendly staff who found us a good table outside in the shade. Good choice in an area of limited options. Easy parking across the road.

We stopped here for lunch on the way to Lorne. After checking out a few different cafes, we chose the General Store because of the variety of food options and the al fresco area which was perfect for our kids. Cute garden area out the back, and lots of room for small boy to roam around. Food was simple and tasty. Highly recommended for family. We also stocked up on some take away food for our stay in Lorne!

What a great friendly place. It has a very relaxed coastal feel. Heaps of home made cakes and yes good coffee. Will definitely come again.
