Great place to learn about a group I never knew excessed. Wendish women use to marry and black and be buried in white. Also they have extensive records if you are of Wendish decent and are trying to trace your ancestors.

We were on a wildflower tour and this was our last stop and our FAVORITE. You must visit the Painted Church on the grounds - breathtaking. Very interesting history of the Wend People and their immigration to the US from eastern Germany in mid-1800s. Staffed by relatives of Wend immigrants who love to share their history and culture with you.

We came with the express purpose of researching my wife's family - We got all of that and more.
Joyce was extremely helpful and a wealth of knowledge, eager and willing to lend a hand and offer tips for further information.
The comprehensive display of artifacts, the buildings, and the beautiful St Paul Lutheran Church were the icing on the cake.
We count this stop as well worth the small effort it took to get there.

We started (and you should too) at the museum, and finished at the church. At the museum you learn who the Wendish are, where they came from, when they came to Texas, and how they got here. I found it quite fascinating; these people came a long way and by sticking together formed a strong and continuing community. Then we visited the beautiful church and talked briefly to the pastor. The church is similar to the other Painted Churches you can find elsewhere (not too far away) in Texas. This trip made for an interesting hour or two to see a piece of Texas (and German) culture that is pretty much unknown outside the immediate area.

Some advance planning can make this visit much more interesting. Our group of 15 arranged for a talk by one of the community members, touring the church, lunch on site and a visit to the museum. Just a phone call can accomplish the above. However, if you are passing through on your way somewhere else, an hour here is well worth the time. The history is especially worthwhile.
