“Stunning Cathedral under Renovation”

Saint-Omer Cathedral
Reviewed 29 June 2018

We popped in here as so close to the entrance from our hotel. It is a magnificent building which when the restoration is complete will be stunning. Well worth a look if you are in the vincinity.

Lovely cathedral, with an astonishing Rubens painting (1616) just there for all to see. Pick up the 30c leaflet in the shop to identify all the things of interest to see while you're there.

We visited the Cathedral in Saint-Omer during a short stay over in the city. We had parked in the square and the Cathedral was a short walk from here. The car park is a pay and display, but on the day of our visit, all of the machines were covered and it appeared that a 90 minute stay was permitted.
We reached the Cathedral on foot and the approach took us through some narrow streets which are quite picturesque. The cathedral inside is large with numerous side chapels opening up off of the main building. At one end is a very impressive organ seemingly the height of the cathedral itself. The interior is white stone with tall arches supporting a high vaulted stone ceiling. A fine carved wooden pulpit is positioned halfway along the nave. Some of the side chapels have some very impressive stained glass windows.
It is our practice when we visit religious houses to light a candle in return for a small donation and there were plenty of opportunities for this in the Cathedral.
If you are in Saint-Omer, then a visit to cathedral will not disappoint.

A very impressive cathedral in the centre of the town. Restoration work is being carried out at the moment so there is scaffolding around it. Interesting to look round.

Staying just around the corner, seeing this cathedral at night was a delight, a very impressive building which towered above its surroundings. Not somewhere necessarily to visit unless you are already in the area itself.
