I chose to stay at Meliá Tamarindos as I thought the location by the sea together with the gardens would provide the right environment for me to relax fully.
As a solo traveller, I found the environment perfect for chilling out and reading by the pool. All the staff are simply wonderful. It’s hard to pick favourites but Joao and Josito who arrange the activities were a lot of fun, also they made introductions so I met some friends.
The hotel is very clean and although the rooms were a bit tired and in need of a refit- they are perfectly good enough. I upgraded to a seaview - next time I would ensure I had a room in the eastern wing to get the last dying rays of the sun. I could have upgraded to “The Level” for an extra £85 a day - the same price for two as one.
It is no doubt even swankier but not worth it if you are out all day anyway.
An enormous highlight was the trip to the hotels observatory and Frank opened all of our eyes to the myriad stars above us. Phenomenal.
San augustin is a small area, with a couple of small supermarkets and cafes. Not much to do but perfect for a fly and flop holiday.

Room Tip: Sunset balcony rooms on east wing

In reality a good 4* hotel. Lovely gardens and pools with access direct to the beach. The observatory session with Frank was really great. Generally the food was very good with reasonable vegetarian choices. The wait staff were very good - except for 1 at the pool bar. The male breakfast chef was consistently miserable but cooked a good omlett. Reception staff were helpful. We were half board which was quite sufficient for us - the all inclusive option was offered but not really explained. TV channel choice was poor for English speaking guests and no kettle facility in the room.

But, it was a great quiet location. Good for families but also quiet relaxing areas in the extensive grounds. Go for a sea view room

Room Tip: Sea view higher floors

Firstly this is a lovely location running straight onto the seafront. The hotel building overlooks the sea and there are gardens and pools on the way down. The sea front is lovely with slightly dark sands and a nice walk onto Malpalomas (avoid the Playa de Ingelas).

Check in was ok (although they did try to charge us for an already paid for holiday). Rooms were good with bizarrely separate bathroom and toilet. Nice balcony to sit on and good daily cleaning and bed making service. However smallish and dated.

Breakfast was wonderful. Fresh papaya, herrings of note but frankly there’s just about everything you would ever want.

We did try the upmarket Tara by Night but thought it overpriced and not up to standard. There are lots of nearby restaurants with Nintos the stand out and more at the nearby shopping centre.

Parking is easy mostly on site but also nearby. Overall we had a nice holiday.

It clearly used to be a great hotel when it was constructed 20-30 years ago, but it is now in need of a large refurbishment to aspire to 5*. To me it is more of a 4* and even less for the food

Good things: location in front of the beach, wonderful garden, nice mix of pools, the ocean view from our room, a friendly and welcoming staff

Things to improve: the dinner and lunch buffets in my opinion were really sub standard for a 5* Resort. Quite repetitive and average quality with a few exceptions. A few more options like a “Tapas Corner” or a daily special would have been appreciated. Also a more robust wine list and a sommelier would have been a nice touch. The dining room above all needs refurbishment

Our trip started in a problematic and stressful way since we were left three hours in the plane because of a snow storm not knowing whether we would be able to take off...upon arrival at the Melia Tamarindos around 9 pm, we were told at check in that we needed to settle 11 days of halfboard for 2 Level suites upfront although a credit card was given for garantie...which we did not agree to. The reservation was made directly through the reservations system of Melia and nothing of the sort was mentioned nor printed....a lady supervisor (? ) finally agreed on a settlement upon departure...
The rest of the stay went on peacefully and to our taste...
We chose this hotel because of the direct access to the beach and ocean and were not disappointed, furthermore, we are Melia fidelity card holders and use their facilities whenever possible.
The suite of the fifth floor was very comfortable, consisting of a large bedroom, flat TV screen, excellent king size bed with a firm mattress, which we personally enjoy. The sitting room had a Nespresso coffee machine , couch and again a flat TV with a large terrace furnished with 2 lounge chairs, a table and 2 armchairs. Ample storing space, a safe as well.
The bathroom had a bathtub with a shower. We definitely prefer a walk-in shower . Toiletries were of Loewe brand and plentiful. Service was excellent, clean, change of bedsheets whenever requested. Decoration of the suite was non existent and gave it a clinical look. They could use a picture or two on the walls to give it a personalized look.
The Level option which we chose was appreciated with a choice of newspaper delivered on a daily basis, the lounge which provided soft drinks, tea and coffee, snacks at lunchtime, cakes in the afternoon and basic drinks in the evening. There was a separate restaurant for breakfast, located near the pool with a very nice service and everything you could ask for, but less than the regular outfit.
There was fitness classes every morning and afternoon in the garden or terrace ( Zumba, Latin dance, Pilates...) and aqua gym in the swimming pool.
A spa offering all kinds of massages which we found to be good.
The promenade along the shore until Playa del Ingles was a pleasure, very well maintained and beautiful sights. San Agustin is quieter than Maspalomas, where you bump into a crowd while walking ...a taxi will take you there for about 8 euros, and there are nice luxury stores which you do not find in San Agustin.
There is a bus station in front of the hotel, with number 30 taking you in an express manner to the capital Las Palmas with the old center and harbour, about 50 minutes ride.
The food at the evening buffet was average, you could always find something to eat but we think an improvement would be needed. The salads provided every evening, although not the same tasted bland. There was a pasta and pizza station, fish, meat, Chinese chop suey which was quite good.
In the evenings, some entertainment, with music, average...
All in all, a relaxing stay, warm weather, beautiful garden.
