Such a nice location right off the Main St mall. Corner of 5th and Water. We had no problem finding free 2 hour street parking when we went for an early Saturday dinner.

After warm March days the weather turned back to cold on the day we visited. This was a comfy and warm place for a repast...our table was cushy like a couch with pillows on one side, and chairs on the other.

When the risotto arrived, we were in heaven! (So embarrassing but we ordered an extra risotto to go!)
The brisket was better than any Grandmother could make. I've had Rose's Luxury brisket, and for me this was better. Spoon tender, perfect potatoes and carrots to accompany. Great au jus. Wonderful to sop up with bread...which I do wish they were more generous with. Three bitty slices for the table, so of course we needed more.
Hubby had the lamb. 3 perfect temperature chops atop a celery purée.

My only caveat, and its personal observation, as well as another in our party...the cutlery isn't ergonomic. The forks feel awkwardly balanced, and difficult to maneuver. Weird comment, I know. But the food and wonderful service make up for this small issue.

This is the first time I have ever been to this place under any name. The place has gone through a rebrand recently and suffers from a "just off the mall" spot. For a winter Saturday night where the weather was great and everything else was packed, the place was dead. The menu online looked great, but the actual menu we were handed had about 1/4 of the choices and 1 of those options was crossed out. A place that dubs itself as "small plates" better have a lot of them. This night there were 5 choices. Again, everything we tried was good, but not great. I hope they figure it out and make it, but from my one visit, I fear another rebrand/remake may soon be in the cards. Cool decor, nice people, good enough food (at Charlottesville prices) usually means new restaurant coming soon... I hope they figure it out.

We were attracted to the restaurant after seeing octopus and risotto among the small plates. We especially liked the octopus. We also shared the large plate of salmon and cauliflower. The plate was large, but the serving really wasn't, although it was good. For dessert we shared a chocolate tart with caramel ice cream. The tart was good, but the ice cream was totally melted into a puddle, which is not good. We were there during happy hour [5-7], which gave us a $1 discount on our drinks.

Four of us had dinner here on a busy Saturday night. Nice bar scene and the place was buzzing. Big improvement in decor & menu over previous restaurant in same space. Attractively priced menu had a great variety of creative choices, and all of our dishes were excellent. Highlights were octopus, salmon over cauliflower, and particularly the escargot in spices, which was an extraordinary preparation with about 10 snails. The short wine list had 8 carefully selected whites and 8 similar reds, each for a very reasonable $30. Some fine choices, so we didn't even look at the larger list. Gruner Veltliner was particularly good. Service was friendly and efficient. Cville has lots of excellent restaurants, but this is a great & welcome addition.

This evening we were in downtown Charlottesville on a bustling Friday (the Virginia Film Festival and parents' weekend at the University) and decided to have an early dinner (6 PM) in a restaurant we had never tried before: Water Street. There were already a fair number of people there, and by 7:30 when we left, the place was packed. And for a good reason: excellent food at reasonable prices. You can choose between small, tapas-like plates and large plates (i.e. regular entrées). We had three small plates and one large between us. The risotto with asparagus and gorgonzola (just about the best-made risotto I have ever had), grilled octopus on a bed of fava beans, peas, and corn, duck breast with pumpkin sauce, and lamb shanks on mashed potatoes and spinach. All was delicious. The wine was excellent too. Water Street has an unusual way of dealing with wine. Their small but well-selected list is priced so that all wines are the same price: $8 per glass, $30 per bottle. The service was attentive and cheerful. And another plus is that the room is not noisy, even when full of people.
