In general, we're not fans of all-you-can-eat sushi since we've run into quality problems with places in Northern Virginia. But Lisa's Cafe was closed unexpectedly for lunch on Saturday so we decided to try Japanese sushi in this tiny, southern town 20 miles southeast of Richmond, VA.
When we walked we were immediately greeted and seated. As we were the only couple dining, we ended up having both a waiter and waitress take turns to check on us. They were both gracious and friendly without becoming overbearing.
While we weren't exactly in the all-you-can-eat (AYCE) mode, we decided the $12.95 AYCE lunch price was attractive. Note: if you order AYCE they bring you a modified menu to order from. We both started with miso soup which came out hot and tasty. Next we both ordered the crab rangoon appetizers which turned out to be delightfully crunchy, fried to perfection and more than stuffed with filling. I enjoyed my spicy tuna, crab roll, and American Dream roll. He tried crab, spicy crab and shrimp tempura roll. Since it was AYCE, we also ordered gyoza and shumai appetizers and another American Dream roll and Shrimp Tempura roll. That's all we could manage, but it was all delicious.
The place would be great for a date, business lunch, hang out with friends, etc. While the decor is understated, it's clean and modern.
The locals think it's a little pricey. Compared to K & L BBQ it may surficially appear to cost more, BUT you get way better food amount, food quality, food freshness, service, atmosphere and ambiance.
We hope more people find out about this delightful restaurant! It's an expected bright spot and happy food experience during our Hopewell, VA visit. If we return to this area, we'll be sure to dine again!
