I think this is the most interesting historic church I've seen in VA due to the tour and museum exhibits here. The museum is surprisingly well done and modern for a small site like this and does a good job explaining the significance of Christ Church. The tour was also very good and explained a lot about the church and the Carter family. The uniqueness of Christ Church is not really in its age, (as there are a number of older churches in VA and even the local area), but rather that there has only been minimal alterations. You really get a sense of what a colonial church was like in VA. History and architecture buffs will enjoy this site.

This small but impressive brick church, built 1735, was brilliantly restored after falling into a period of neglect in the 19th century. Miraculously, it survived mostly intact, including all the wonderful original wood interior features.
The small museum in front of the church has an excellent, informative 10-minute introductory video and lots of artifacts, timelines, other videos and interactive computer displays (be sure to look at the one about the amazingly complex interior roof structure, all totally invisible when inside the church). Knowledgeable docents are happy to spend time with you.

We arrived after hours and so were not able to get inside the church or museum. However we did walk around the grounds and were impressed with the beauty and symmetry of the church architecture.

This is a wonderful place to visit!! It holds up to or beats nearby Williamsburg. The volunteers are very knowledgeable about the structure and the grounds. There is a museum that teaches you the history and architecture of the magnificent original church. The church is so beautiful and has so many original items including the pews and the black walnut three tier pulpit. Highly recommend the site. Try not to be in too much of a hurry, lots to learn!!
