I'd heard many, many good things about Rimba Resort from friends who often make the trip north from Singapore to Pulau Sibu for a weekend away from the big smoke and so when a group decided to travel up for a 30th birthday (March 1-4) I had a chance to experience the place for myself.
I was not to be disappointed.
We didn't get to the island until 11pm due to a flight from Dubai being delayed but we were immediately greeted with a smile and a delicious sandwich and the promise of cold beer. Any thoughts of tiredness were quickly put to one side as the Rimba team made us all feel very welcome and the owner Mal even sat up with my mate and I while we had a (very) late beer. A great start.
The huts, which nestle on the edge of the jungle and a few metres from the beach, are basic but clean, comfortable and allowed a beautiful breeze to keep you cool at night. Others might ask for more from their accommodation but not me as they brought back happy memories of my days as a happy-go-lucky backpacker.
Saturday daytime involved a fantastic boat trip for a mere MYR60 each to a beautiful beach where we could snorkel and chill out and also enjoy a lovely lunch.
That brings me to the food which is simply stunning and took me by surprise. Saturday night's BBQ featured lamb, chicken, prawns and snapper - all brilliant - and the Sunday 4-course meal was it's equal. I can honestly say the tomato soup starter was the best I've ever had.
The staff, headed up by Carly and Adam, are all fun, friendly and make you feel welcome all the time. They were also happy to accommodate us for an extra night when a few of us decided to extend our stay because we simply didn't want to leave!!
All in all it made for a brilliant weekend and I will certainly be heading back to Rimba Resort again and again especially to do some diving once the visibilty improves.
Keep up the good work, guys!More
