We stayed in a Mount Robinson Room this year and loved the scenic views from our room! Deer would wander right up to the balcony and you can spy snow on peaks hundreds of miles apart. Breakfast specialty is the eggs benedict which we ordered every day. Well, I also got a huge whole wheat pancake too - yum! Two warm whirlpools and two cool, but not cold, swimming pools all with views over the valley. Also a spacious and well stocked game room, library (with lots of books in German). Outside activities include horse rides, trails, bikes, tennis courts and horseshoes games. A little playground for the tots.

Room Tip: If you like trails, take your bug spray! No TVs in the rooms but internet is good. Check highway conditions in Summer due to wild fires.

We went for a Friday through Sunday stay just prior to the 4th of July rush. With four lodging options available, we selected a suite in the Mt. Robinson building based on the website room description using words like ‘luxury’ and ‘elegant’. In addition, when my wife had called and spoke with reservations, she was told that this building was typically for adult couples. The rep also said that of the two pools, the one near our building was also geared towards adults. Upon our arrival, we were able to do an early check-in that was smooth and without issue. We then drove down the road to the Mt. Robinson building. Our well-appointed suite was exactly as described with a large living room with a dining area, a comfortable size separate bedroom and a very large bathroom. The view from our small patio, just like from the main lodge and restaurants, was magnificent. And yes, definitely the romantic getaway we wanted.

Unfortunately, since this was a last minute plan we could only get the suite on the first floor. But, no problem we thought since the building was geared towards adults….or so we were told. Fast forward to the pool later that afternoon for a quiet respite of sun and water. We joined 3 other adult couples lounging at the pool nearest our building. Perfect setting, that is until the couple with their eight or nine year old daughter arrived. It became immediately evident that taking a nap or reading was out of the question. Within 15-minutes we had had enough of the child running around and loudly squealing as she continually jumped in and out of the water. As we left, so did two other couples. We all exchanged comments of being disappointed.

That evening, we went into Winthrop for dinner but stopped in at the lodge’s Dining Room for a fabulous dessert. Returning to our suite, we quickly realized that our quiet intimate evening was going to be drowned out by the running and jumping of the child in the suite above us. Stepping onto the patio with the hopes of those above us quieting down, we were met with the same squealing as at the pool. Yes, the family was directly above us and the little girl was doing what kids do on a vacation—having fun! Unfortunately, it was happening over our heads. By 10:00 we had had enough and my wife called the front desk. The clerk was very apologetic, stated repeatedly that they ‘try not to put families in that particular building’ but that she was unable to do anything. We listened to the running and jumping for another 10 or so minutes and my wife called back and asked that we be moved right away. The clerk said nothing was available and again apologized about ‘children typically not staying in that building’. My wife then firmly insisted that the clerk call the family and tell them to please settle their daughter down. Five-minutes later we were met with a welcome silence.

The following morning my wife spoke with LeAnne, the front desk supervisor who could not have been more gracious, accommodating and apologetic. LeAnne went above and beyond in her sincere and friendly conversation with my wife. LeAnne had wanted to give us an envelope on behalf of the lodge but my wife declined because she did not feel right about accepting whatever was contained inside. The gesture alone was sufficient for us.

The only other negative was that I could not get cell phone reception in our room. Upon our arrival I had called the desk about this and was told to come up to the lodge and stand outside at the flagpole since that was where the best reception for Verizon service was. This is not what I expected from the lodge and if their intention was for people to be ‘unplugged’, it should say so on their website.

Overall, the lodge is lovely and the many low impact-hiking trails offer fantastic scenic views. If we return, we will bring our children and young grandchildren for them to enjoy the amenities. But, when we want a quiet ‘adult’ getaway, we will look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Top floors for reduced noise

We're so sorry to hear your stay wasn't as relaxing as possible, and we appreciate your review. As you know, we try to put families in other areas of the resort, but it cannot always be accommodated, especially during the extremely busy summer months. We really appreciate your feedback, and hope you are able to give us a second chance to wow you in the future. Thank you very much for reaching out and have a great day.

Beautiful view from our room overlooking the pool and mountains. The pool and hot tub were great. The room was updated, clean and quiet. The lodge was well done. Very open and inviting. The staff was great. The staff in the activities shop was great. They took care of signing us up for the cowboy dinner/trail ride. They made sure we all got horses. You have to go on the trail ride and have dinner it was amazing. Beautiful views, friendly staff, and great food. Even live music. We will be back and stay longer next time. Thank you!!! Don't stay anywhere else in Winthrop.

Room Tip: Cowboy dinner and trail ride. Must see!

My husband I chose to stay at the Sun Mountain Lodge because we love hiking and mountain views. The Lodge is a sweet summer getaway for outdoor enthusiasts. There is mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, kayaking and so much more! We hiked everyday we stayed. The staff is helpful and friendly and gave many recommendations on things to do and places to hike. The rooms were spacious and clean. When we arrived late at night on a Friday the staff included a small flashlight on our room key. When we entered our room the lights were dimmed and soft music was playing in the background. Those small touches immediately helped me relax. As far as food goes, I have a few food allergies so we decided to bring our own food with us in a cooler and the hotel staff was kind enough to supply us with a microwave for our room. They are only in the rooms by request. Last thing I will mention is the cowboy dinner. You have to experience it if you go. You take a ride in a horse-led covered wagon out to an open field to eat dinner ( steak/chicken/hotdogs & other sides) while being serenaded by a singing guitarist. It ends with making a s'more over a roaring campfire. Make sure to bring your bug repellant though because you are in the woods. The staff of Sun Mountain Lodge are dedicated to make sure you enjoy your stay and the General Manager, Brian, is attentive and will help you with any concerns. I would highly recommend staying at the Sun Mountain Lodge.

We spent our anniversary at Sun Mountain Lodge. What a lovely place to be with the weather in the 90s and the spectacular views to enjoy. Our room was in the Mt. Robinson section with a great view. Our one negative was that the bedding is heavy and quilted. It was definitely too warm and made for a horrible night's sleep. Then, the housekeeper helped us find a light blanket and all was well. No TV didn't bother us as we had a good internet connection. Dinner of beef tenderloin in the dining room was delicious as was the breakfast of Eggs Benedict. It was a very pricey two night stay but we were glad that we experienced the beauty of this special place.
