We made reservations here two months in advance but we were moved to the Microtel across the street because the visiting team playing WVU was staying there that night. We were notified a few days before and the General Manager, Adam, was very apologetic and offered to comp our first night stay at the Microtel. We were concerned at first and a little flustered but we understood the situation and having our first night comped was very nice. We requested a move back to the Wingate for the next night of our stay in town (for a wedding) and he said that was totally do-able. We picked the Wingate over the Microtel because of the additional amenities and the larger breakfast selection. Adam even said we could use the Wingate facilities while we were staying at the Microtel but we did not want to walk back and forth both days.
The room over all was nice. You could tell that it was worn in many places with carpet stains here and there and some carpet peeling but the important parts were very well kept. The sheets looked very clean and the bathroom was also clean. We had a room with a jetted hot tub and it was also very clean. The tvs worked well with channels guides provided. It did bug me a little that not all the light bulbs were the same color. But that is probably a more personal taste. The ice machine also had seen better days but was working. There were also plenty of towels provided. We stayed here about 4 years ago in the same type of room and we would again if we were in town.
The gym looked very nice although we did not use it and same with their business center. We did use the indoor pool which was nice because it was so quiet and we had the place to ourselves both times we went. The pool and pool area was clean as far as we could tell and the towels were always stocked. it's a lndoor pool but has a large bank of windows to the outside so it was very nice. It was a little disappointing that the hot tub was "out of order". The kids loved the pool though. There were a lot of deep gouges in the pool floor and you could tell some patching was done. It didn't bother us any other than the aesthetics didn't look so great. The pool went from 3.5 feet to about 5 ft at the deep end so it was harder for the littler kids to play without life jackets or an adult in the water with them at all times.
The breakfast selection was very nice. They rotated out the hot foods each day. There were biscuits, eggs and sausage. The second day the regular eggs were replaced simple cheese omelets. There was a Belgian Waffle maker, juice machine with apple, orange and grape juice as well as a large selection of baked goods and pastries (bread for toast, bagels, danishes and muffins. There was also cereal and milk (including chocolate for the kids). There was also yogurt and hard boiled eggs. Most importantly... coffee. :D Throughout the day they also had popcorn available and soft baked cookies near the front desk. Only issue here is every time the kids saw them they wanted one.
The only negative experience really at the Wingate other than the being moved to the other hotel for the first night was when we tried to check in on the second day. We were hoping to check in after the wedding ceremony and before the reception. The general manager, Adam, said he could not guarantee it would be available especially because they had an entire football team with staff staying there the night before and all the rooms had to be turned over. We understood this fact but Adam said it couldn't hurt to give them a call and ask. Well when i called in and asked around 2PM I got a very blunt response from the gentleman who answered the phone at guest services, "No, check-in is at 4PM!". He obviously didn't look to check or anything and just blew us off over the phone. Other weddings guests staying there said they got the same response. However all the other staff we interacted with at the hotel was super nice. Both the ladies staffing the breakfast each morning were super nice and very friendly and even had engaging conversations with the kids. One was even kind enough to turn the television station to some cartoons which was very nice as the kids were done eating and starting to get antsy.
Also there are a lot of restaurants right next to the hotel (walk-able) including gas stations. Location worked out great for us as it was 15 mins to the church and 15 mins to the reception in town.
Overall we would stay here again. :D
