On a whim (no reservations) we drove 4 hours to Alpine Resort from Ohio. We hadn't been there for 15 years.
The hotel room was clean, but the exterior could use an update and the carpets need replaced. Nothing fancy but fair price.
The lodge had nice amenities. The indoor pool and fitness center were great. They are both open 5:30am to 11pm which is very accommodating. If you get on the treadmill/stationary bike you get a great view of the lake.
We had a wonderful dinner at the lodge, especially the Maryland crab soup! The WV mountain water makes all beverages taste better. My only complaint regarding food was the Sunday breakfast buffet was average. I would of preferred a continental breakfast of cereal, fruit, juices, bagels, pastries, etc.
If you are seeking a low-key vacation for quiet respite, Alpine is the place to go. We left our electronic gadgets at home and enjoyed the beautiful views walking around the lake. With just 35 hotel rooms available, you can enjoy golf, swimming, tennis and exercising without dealing with crowds.
From Alpine we took a short drive to Oakland, MA to walk this quaint town and visited a few antique/thrift shops.
Even though it was for only one night, my husband and I had a pleasant stay and it was enough to get away from the chaos of home and work.
