My wife and I spent the night at the White Lake Beach Resort as part of an annual Steampunk gathering called the Cog County Faire. We had a lovely time and were impressed by the resort's staff and facilities.
White Lake Beach Resort has been in existence for decades. Set along the shore of White Lake, its rustic charm is undeniable. The clear water and soft sand beach are an attraction by themselves, and the resort offers rentals of kayaks, rowboats, beach umbrellas, fire pits, and more to help take advantage of the setting. While fishing is allowed on White Lake, the Resort does not rent fishing equipment, nor does it provide fishing licenses, though a fish cleaning station is provided. The Resort offers a coin-operated arcade on site with numerous amusements, including air hockey, ping-pong, and many arcade-style games, all in good working order.
The restaurant, described as a "casual fine dining" establishment, offers a variety of dishes, specializing in Italian fare. Despite not being a huge steak eater myself, their smoked prime rib particularly caught my fancy, as it was tender, juicy, and delicious, with just the right amount of smokiness. After having eaten four meals here over two visits in the last year, I would say the food is universally quite good, with many menu items being excellent. The full-service bar and lounge is staffed by knowledgeable bar tenders, and offers a good selection of local beers...My wife and I spent the night at the White Lake Beach Resort as part of an annual Steampunk gathering called the Cog County Faire. We rented an "apartment" overnight. It was a suite, featuring two bedrooms (sleeps 5 in beds; we think the couch in the living/dining area was also a sleeper sofa) and were pleased to find updated appliances in the kitchenette, including a small refrigerator/freezer, microwave, and gas stove/oven. Dishes and silverware are even provided, allowing for a more cost-conscious stay supplemented by food from the local grocery in town (or bring your own). While pets are not welcome in all guest accommodations, they are welcome in some of the cottages/vacation homes.
The place is comfortable and the staff is warm and friendly. Many of the furnishings show more than a bit of wear, though are quite serviceable regardless. Montello, Wisconsin is roughly an hour north of Madison, and a car will be quite essential to reach it.
Getting back to nature is a strong theme here; the resort also raises peacocks, and the males can be seen frequenting the grounds, calling from time to time to proclaim themselves worthy as peacocks.
White Lake Beach Resort is situated directly next to a golf course. Since neither my wife nor I golf, we cannot speak to those facilities with any knowledge.
A charming summer getaway, White Lake Beach Resort may not be the cheapest vacation you'll find, but the romantic setting, friendly staff, and charm of the place will make it a memorable vacation.More
