I was probably set up for failure. I came from perfection (Kane Plantation) to this. The setting is beautiful here. The chef is AWESOME- and he does a fabulous chef dinner with wine pairing. Kudos to him- he should be in Hell’s Kitchen!

Now for the bad news. First of all - the room was representative of a house with bad construction - cheap plyboard doors etc. second - Brown? Gross. The bedspread was brown satin. I’m only mentioning this because the only place for us to sit was our “patio” (aka- “lanai” with a view of the roof: ) No sitting area inside - outside sucked.

The bed was lumpy and the sheets and the pillows added to the whole “uncomfortable” scenario. And when all you have to offer in the room is the bed- well there you go. And BROWN SATIN,

Now we come to the straw that broke the camel’s back. They had a cat f or the inn. Some guests loved it- my husband is highly allergic to cats. The first night there, he had to get up and “evict” the cat (which other guests apparently loved) from the room three times. The next day he suffered from an allergic reaction. Why you might ask? Well in Hawaii they don’t have air conditioning in lots of places. That’s no biggie- except to open the door to our room we had to put a screen in place - great. No biggie. Except the screen wouldn’t keep the cat out. The cat - per the front desk and other guests- figured out how to get in the screen! Isn’t that cute and fun?!? At one point it was in bed with us!

My husband takued to the sweet girl at the desk - her first response was “Yes - the cat does that. Can you shut the door?” Finally to her credit she managed to fix the situation. She tried- but honestly- do YOU want an animal in your bed?

If it weren’t for the positive attitude of the staff I would have given them even less stars. If you stay here, you’ll most likely be disappointed.

Shannon, I am so sorry that you found our choice of sheet colors so repulsive, and that it impacted your stay as much as it did. I am more sympathetic to your situation with the cat, and appreciate how allergies made that more frustrating. It is also important to understand that our property is home to a family of rare and endangered native hawaiian hawks that like to eat rodents, and as such, we prefer natural pest contral methods over poisons, mainly in the form of adorable, loveable inn cats, which are (almost) universally loved by our guests. I appreciate your husband had allergies, and in that case, shutting the door is the correct, fail-safe solution. I am so glad you enjoyed dinner with Nathan - he is truly amazing, and we are blessed to work with him.

Arrived in the dark, woke up to a great cup of coffee and enjoyed on the deck. The waterfall was a stone’s throw away. Dinner with Nathan Stewart was the one of the highlights. Dishes I recognized but infused with the local flavors of Big Island Hawaii—a unique dining experience prepared by a local artist.

Off the grid, private, secluded and beautiful. Enjoyed the waterfall and the bamboo trail. The dinner and wine pairing was delicious. We had to ask Alice the cat to leave our room for the night because my husband is allergic to cats. The couple upstairs happily took him in for the third night in a row! We were unable to take advantage of all that they had to offer in terms of outdoor activities, but we enjoyed the serenity for the one night that we were there.

Don't miss this place. The grounds and private waterfall are great. We unfortunately had only one weekend night here, so were unable to do the dinner experience. However, the beautiful grounds and swimming in the waterfall pool more than made up for it. A nice breakfast (for covid) and a couple of friendly cats rounded out the stay.

A last-minute trip and booking led us to The Inn at Kulaniapia Falls. What a pleasure we had from the drive into our room and the amazing waterfall just a short hike away. The beauty of this place needs to be experienced first hand. Take out a kayak or stand up paddle or just swim under the falls. If you are as extremely lucky as we were you might be able to have Alice the cat join you in your room during the night. This Inn is top-notch all the way! We only wish we could have stayed longer!

Room tip: We have a room on the 3rd floor with a large lanai. There isn't air conditioning but it was not a problem at all.
