Hale Moana Bed & Breakfast

Owners Petra & John are so friendly, welcoming, and accommodating, that they make this little B&B a real joy to stay at. At the end of a side street in a small remote subdivision near Lava Trees State Park, with rain forest abutting the back yard, it is a beautiful little hideaway that would be really quiet - except for the coqui frogs that have invaded all of Puna. You may love or hate their cheerful chirping at night, but you can't ignore it unless you live there and have become habituated. If you are a light sleeper you will have to deal with this issue wherever you stay in Puna, or probably anywhere on the east side of Hawaii Island. Other than that, the room was nice, the breakfast was good, and the hospitality exceptional.

We did not find the place near as good as the reviews, first it's hot, there are lots of bugs, so you can't go out at night without lots of bug spray.
It's far away from town.
I like kids, but enough is enough, the kids are very nice but won't leave you alone, so it can be hard for peace and quiet alone.
The owners seem very nice and it's clean though.

Room Tip: The room at the end of the house seems more private.

My wife and I recently stayed at Hale Makamae after spending several days at a big resort in Waikoloa on the other side of the island. This was our 2nd trip to the Big Island in consecutive years. We wanted to spend some extended time in the Hilo area, explore the volcano, and wanted to find and stay at a nice B&B. We did some extensive searching online and found a number of B&B's in the area, but kept coming back to Hale Makamae. It appeared to be exactly like what we were looking for and was. My wife and I GREATLY enjoyed Hale Makamae and its wonderful host Petra. We selected the upstairs Lanai Suite. While the Lanai suite was probably a bit more than we needed, we really enjoyed the roominess of this space. For us it was worth the extra expense. It also had a beautiful view of the wonderful grounds. Petra and John have done wonderful job landscaping their grounds; it really is a beautiful place to stay. While others may have complained about the lack of AC in the rooms, we really enjoyed the fresh air and cool Hawaiian breeze. We kept the doors open almost all the time, so that we could hear the frogs, feel the breeze, and listen to it rain. The suite had a couple ceiling fans which was more than enough to keep us cooler. Our host Petra was wonderful. Besides providing delicious breakfasts, as others have mentioned, she spent a lot of time answering our questions and providing us input and advice on places to see and go. Hale Makamae was a bit further from Hilo than we had originally thought, about 30 minutes, but that really wasn't an issue. It was actually nice to be away from the heart of the city. While we had planned to use our rooms kitchen facilities more, because of the amount of time we spent exploring it was just easier to eat out. Per Petra's advice, we ate a couple dinners in the wonderful little town of Pahoa, just a few minutes up the road (also got a Hale Makamae discount in Pahoa). We really can't say enough good things about Hale Makamae. We highly recommend staying there and look forward to staying there again in the near future.

Lovely Room and grounds. John,Petra (the owners) and their children made us feel part of their family. They were full of helpful tips about the area and the breakfasts were always delicious ( especially the banana pancakes!). We would definitely return.

We really enjoyed the tropical setting at this Bed and Breakfast. We stayed in the two bedroom suite that gave us plenty of room to relax and enjoy the garden view from the sliding glass doors. Petra and John really take the time to get to know their guests and explain the sites to visit in the area. I was impressed with how they treated each new guest that arrived at their place. I highly recommended this B&B if you want to enjoy the relaxing, tropical side of the Big Island. Of course, the fresh fruit every morning was amazing. I'm missing the fresh papaya and bananas already.

Room Tip: I recommend the two bedroom suite on the second floor.
