I'll be making reservations later today for March 2012.
We stayed at the Kauai Inn in 2009 and 2011 and were totally pleased with the experience.
It's a great value, has beautiful grounds, is clean and centrally located.
It does not take that long to drive west to Po'ipu or even Koke'e.
Kapa'a is a stone's throw away and the drive to the East or North Shore sights is easy.
You'll like it too!

The Kauai Inn is an excellent family-run hotel just outside Lihue; a terrific value at a very reasonable rate. Getting there does involve driving through the small port area and past some warehouses, but the hotel itself is in a small residential neighborhood that backs up to some tall nearby cliffs. Grounds are well kept and the small pool was a good place to sit and relax. Fresh fruit and (Costco) pasteries for breakfast, served in an outdoor patio.

Staff was local, and very helpful; hotel has a reference shelf of Kauai guidebooks you can borrow. The hotel is family owned and friendly and low key. This is a slightly older property but well-maintained and very clean. Rooms all open up to an outdoor walkway, so you may have other guests walking by your window. Small patios on the ground floor; 2nd floor rooms have great flow-through ventilation. King bed was very comfy. Plenty of space in the room, nicely furnished with middle America decor. Free wireless Internet was good to adequate.

This proved to be a great value, and a perfect family location to base your travels around Kauai. There is a beach within a half-mile, but only so-so.... If you prefer the big resort experience the Kauai Marriott Resort is nearby, but at 2x to 3x the price. We ate there once, but were glad we chose the Kauai Inn as our lodging. Kauai Inn is highly recommended, so long as you are not expecting the big resort experience.

Room tip: Second floor rooms have nice breezes. A/C in most rooms if you prefer.

When I take a few days aside from 'working travel,' I generally try to minimize expenses as much as possible. I have even stayed in hostels when local motel rates seem a bit high! After some online review, it appeared that a satisfactory hostel was not in the offing on Kauai (although I have found fine ones on Hawaii and Maui), so I began to search for a bargain motel. The Kauai Inn was very well reviewed, and the price for a three-night stay wasn't much more than a private hostel room. I did not expect great amenities, since the rates were so low. Imagine my surprise upon arrival when I discovered that the grounds and pool were beautifully cared for, every staff member was sincerely friendly and helpful, and the 'continental' breakfast was delicious, with lots of fresh fruit. To top it all off, the room was truly exceptional--spacious, with a VERY comfortable king-size bed, a 40" inch+, new LCD TV with cable, a fridge and microwave,, ample storage and closet space, and a room-width window that looked out on the gorgeous Kauai mountains, etc., etc. With all this comfort and courtesy for less than $100/per, I thought I had struck the mother-lode! I hope to return to Kauai in the coming year, and I won't even bother looking for any other place to stay. Kauai Inn is the best! Try it--you'll love it!

Stayed at the Kauai Inn for 5 nights in November '11. The pictures tell the truth, this place looks like something out of your Hawaiian dreams! Beautiful green mountains behind the place, lagoons pool side. Can't quite see the ocean from there, but the lagoon looks cool and the ocean is a short drive away. Fantastic continental breakfast of breads, juice, and the freshest fruit I've ever had. The check-in ladies were the most friendly we encountered our entire vacation and were more than accomodating. Beds were comfortable and despite the small a/c it cooled off nicely. Free parking, plenty of space. The only hotel in Hawaii we stayed at with free parking! I'd give the place a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars if Trip Advisor let me. The only reason for the half star was the wi-fi internet. I had brought my laptop hoping to research places to go to / see / eat at each day but the connection was spotty at best. On the weekdays we were there, I seemed to get some slow connections but later on the weekend, more people were staying there and I couldn't get any internet connection at all. So I guess that'd be my only suggestion is if they could get a better router/more connections for their property, that'd make things just about perfect.
