It will take at least half a day... depending on how many times you will stop to explore paths on the bluffs and take pictures. And there is something to see behind every bend in the road. No 4X4 required. There are many little beaches if you want to swim (no life guards). Pack a cooler with sandwiches and enjoy.
There is a lot of controversy over this trip, do it clockwise, or anticlockwise, 300+ ft drops with no guard rails, fantastic views, one lane roads, few places to pull over and let oncoming cars pass, you can't drive this with a rental car, and that you need a 4X4. What is true, is that this is a much more beautiful and exhilarating drive than the road to Hanna, (unless you are a timid driver) more exciting than whale watching (unless your a timid driver) and there is one section around 1.5 miles of paved road that is one lane and approximately 2.5 that is less than a 2 lane road but with opportunities on both sections to allow others to pass. Keep in mind that custom here is that if there is no room to pass the uphill driver backs up until they find room to let the downward car pass because they can maintain better control. Very exciting drive but not for the timid driver, on one of our drives here a driver was so nervous, they could not back up causing a 20 min delay until they allowed someone to take control of their car. Go slow enjoy the drive and if you are a lucky passenger, enjoy the drive and the views, you are in for a treat. Not to be missed!!!!!!
A really lovely drive for scenery. We decided to go on a whim so hadn't done any reading beforehand, and I'm glad I didn't as I might have changed my mind. We went anti-clockwise in order to be on the side of the road best able to appreciate the view. It was a bit drizzly, but all the drivers we came across were slow and considerate- if there had been any idiots it would have been terrifying!
This is a beautiful drive! Very narrow roads & many places where it's one lane. Go from the Ka'anapali side and head Northwest, then East to Kahului. Don't forget to stop by Julia's best Banana Bread and other stops, such as the Blow Hole! Definitely worth the somewhat dangerous drive!
We didn't know much about this road until we were on it- it's certainly an adventure! I agree with other reviewers, take clockwise route. The scenery is absolutely beautiful but there aren't too many places to stop for photos especially after the blow hole. Julia's banana bread stand was closed, assuming 5pm is closing time. The road is single car wide, dozens of tight corners, hairpin turns, falling rocks, no guardrails, and steep cliffs. If you are unsure about taking this road, turn around at blowhole. It took us about 1.5 hrs to go rest of the way, encountered mostly locals coming towards us.
Some will love this drive and some will hate it. Extremely narrow in places without guardrails. Best done clockwise so as to have the cliff side on the other side of the road. Know thyself and thy family. Very few options for turning around so don't get divorced over this drive. Bring a picnic, don't have unrealistic expectations about travel time and enjoy the spectacular scenery.
