Village by the Sea is a great place to stay. We stayed for two weeks in March and had a great time. Stayed at a Royal Aloha unit and had everything we needed for our stay. Full kitchen, dining room, Bedroom and good sized living room. It is enjoyable to have your morning beverage on the lanai. We were out there every morning. We saw whales right from the lanai. Very relaxing. Swimming, hot tub, beautiful grounds and much more. We stay there every time we go to Maui. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Aloha and thank you for your review! We are very happy to hear that you had such a relaxing and enjoyable stay at Kauhale Makai (village by the Sea). Staying in a condo provides conveniences like a full kitchen and lots of room to move around in. Having a lanai is great because you can enjoy the refresh ocean breezes while relaxing on your extended living space and it's an added bonus when you are able to see the whales playing in the ocean. Although we are not your rental management company for this unit we are thankful for the review. We hope that you continue to stay at Kauhale Makai in the future. Mahalo, the management at Maui Condo and Home, LLC.

We spent two weeks in Maui for our tenth anniversary. The last time we traveled to Maui we stayed in Kahana, which is in the Northern part of the island. Kihei is a 45 minute drive south of Kahana.
We booked the Kauhale Makai despite some questionable reviews. (Something we often do because we've found some of the loveliest places that way.) Because we were traveling for a special occasion, I called the property ahead of time and asked them to please place us in one of their nicest oceanview rooms. We were given unit 627.
We arrived on Maui later in the evening, around 830 or 9 o'clock (pm). After getting our rental car (A whole other story, but long story short: When on Maui SMALLER cars are better. Opt for the smallest you can get.) we set out for the Kauhale Makai.
One thing to know about the Kauhale Makai (here on called KM), is that no one calls it that. If you tell a local you're at the Kauhale Makai, you get a blank stare. If you say "I am at the Village by the Sea" they smile and nod, knowing exactly where you mean. So, get used to using the latter to describe your location.
As we drove up to the place I noted that there are 2 towers. We stayed in the tower on the left when facing the property. The grounds were neat, if somewhat unimpressive. (Just a bit bland, no real "gardens" to speak of etc) Because we were arriving at night, there was no one at the desk, and we simply followed the procedure we had be directed to follow, using their night box to get our key (which in our unit is actually a punch code, not a key) and our assigned parking space. After parking our land yacht...I mean crown vic...we followed the signs to the elevator. I was relieved to see that the elevator was nice, and in good repair. On Hawaii, so many of them are not!
The buildings are "open air" in the middle, and so we could hear the ocean as we walked to our room. Punching in the door code let us in, and I think we both were holding our breath to see what we had rented for the next two weeks. I was extremely pleased to see our unit!
627 had a lovely kitchen as you walk in the door. Granite counter tops, stainless steel sink, a nice fridge, and plenty of dishes. The "dining room" held a small table and chairs. The floors were all tile or laminate. There was a large TV, maybe a 42'? The couch was sort of a wicker or bamboo type affair, but comfortable. The coffee table was freshly laid out with books containing local advertisements, coupons for restaurants and shopping centers etc. The bedroom was neither large nor small, but the closet was pretty tiny. A large dresser, an end table and a king size bed filled the space pretty well. (There was also an alarm clock, but who needs that?!? It's vacation!) There was no TV in the bedroom. This may not bother some, but I know it will others, so I've noted it. The bathroom was just off the bedroom, and it was functional and clean, but somewhat small. (Incidentally, the Kauhale must have some super great water heaters, because they had some of the hottest water I've ever felt!) There was cable TV, and internet in 627, BUT, there was no wireless. You had to hook your computer up by cable, which was a problem for me since I'd brought my tablet PC. I was able to find a random wireless signal and use that, but being on vacation, I rarely used the computer anyway. I wasn't in Hawaii to stare at a screen! There was also some kind of iPod docking thing, and a DVD player I think...neither were things we used but, FYI. The AC worked well and quietly.
The view: Oceanview at the KM isn't that impressive. We could see the ocean, but not that well. It's still a lovely view, just understand that there is 300+ yards of lawn and palm trees between you and the ocean. From our unit our view was nice, but not "awe inspiring" and in all honesty there are no units in the KM that are "awe inspiring" in their views. If you want that, you'll be paying much more. See my other review of the Kahana beach resort if you want some jaw dropping views out your lanai. The Lanai was lovely, nicely sized with an outdoor table and chairs. There was direct access to the lanai from both the livingroom and bedroom. You are asked to NOT hang we suits and towels on the lanai, as they usually either drip onto the folks below, or blow onto someone else's balcony.
The laundry facilities were small on our floor(like 3 washers and dryers?) but in good shape, and coin operated. Detergent could be purchased at the front desk very cheaply.
The pool was something we did not use but it was very clean looking and had many folks happily using it on and off, as well as the hot tub. It's locked up so only guests of the KM could use it. It is surrounded by BBQs, which were very popular. Again, we had no use for them, but they did appear to be in good shape and were in use throughout the day, most days. There are also shuffle board courts next to the pool, as well as a foot shower station so you could rise your feet off when you came back from a walk on the beach, so you don't track sand into the condos.
After seeing the unit and being pleased to find it was as lovely as could be, we went straight to bed since it was now almost 1 am by our "back home time" and we were done in.
The next morning we set out to see the beach behind the condos. Now, this is important information for you to understand about this beach:
This beach is NOT for swimming. This beach is simply for walking along and maybe wading. The beach has some wicked currents, plenty of rocks, lots of sea urchins, and stays very shallow for a long way out. The strip of sand is not wide, maybe 15' to 25' in most places. There is some algae wash up. Not much, and during our stay it did not smell, nor was it over-abundant. You must be aware of this though. It is not fair to stay at a place like this and then give it a low rating because you were unaware of the beach conditions, which I see many have done. The KM does not tout it's location as a swimming beach location, so please do not judge it as such.
Now, back to the beach. To get to the beach, you must cross a "lawn" of sorts. It's approximately 400 yards of lawn until you hit the beach. There are scattered palms and a few other varieties of trees on the lawn, but it's mostly very open. Once you get to the beach, you'll see a nice strip of sand with a rock line where the tide pushes stones up on to the beach each day. We enjoyed the beach here very much, just to walk each day, feet in the surf, and look at all the shells, stones, and sea debris that washed ashore. The sunsets were fabulous here. This is an excellent beach, for walking, and we ran into some very nice folks doing just what were, many with their dogs. Being dog people, we found this a plus.
The KM is really in a great location. If you want a great swimming beach, you're very close to one of the nicer ones. Just 2 or 3 miles south of the KM is a large beach called Kamaole beach. This is your closest swimming beach if you stay at the KM. It is not far nor is it difficult to find.
If you are a breakfast person (like me) you're up and ready to eat each morning! The very best breakfast eatery we found was just about 2 miles from the KM, a small place called "Kihei Cafe." This is a go inside, order at the counter, then go back outside to a table and they bring the food to you type of place. Great food, great service, good prices for Maui.
There is plenty of shopping near by the KM, especially outdoor markets, farmers markets etc. Also convenient are a Boss Frogs for renting snorkel gear, a Longs Drugs for medications, batteries, soda etc, and a Safeway grocery store for your food needs. (These places offer the best prices that we found on the island.)

So, some things to remember about the KM before you stay there:

1. This is NOT a hotel per se. These are condos. That means that each condo has it's own owner, an owner who lives somewhere else fulltime, and rents their condo to help pay the crazy high fees they pay to own it. This means that each unit at the KM is different. Some are owned by people of means who are able to decorate and maintain a very nice unit, like ours was. This also means that some of the units are owned by people who can just barely afford to own the unit, and it hasn't been redecorated since 1974, and it shows. This is not a 100% accurate rule, but it did seems that the lower floors had less desireable condos. So, perhaps if this is a huge concern for you, it'd be best to call the KM ahead of time and ask for an "Updated unit" before you arrive. Call at least 1 month in advance, if not more.

2. The beach is not for swimming. They don't advertise it as such. If you do not understand this, you will be unhappy upon arrival. Don't take it out on the KM just because you failed to understand this.

3. If you get here after hours, there is no one to help you. You must do as you were told when you reserved your condo, which is call 72 hours BEFORE you arrive, and get the after hours instructions for the lock box out front. This is a very easy procedure to follow, and is no big deal. You MUST do this. If you don't you'll be calling the answering service from your cell phone in the parking lot, and arranging for help that will now take longer and inconvenience everyone, including you and your family.

4. There is no room service because (see item number 1) this is NOT a hotel. You do your own laundry, you clean up after yourself. It's not difficult.

5. The condo owners request that all guests follow the traditional Hawaiian custom of no shoes in the house. You walk in the door, and take off your "slippers" as they say. Choose to not do this and you may be charged an extra cleaning fee if you track sand and dirt in on the rugs and tiles. Be respectful. Treat it as you'd want YOUR home to be treated when being used by guests.

All in all we loved the KM and would stay here again. The people were nice, our unit was sublime, and we found the location to be excellent for traveling all over the island for activities! To the owners of our unit: Mahalo! (But the king sized bed is just a touch hard! Maybe a memory foam pad?)

Stay at the KM, eat at the Kihei Cafe and Peggy Sue's 50's diner! (Peggy's had excellent peanut butter shakes, and a chicken plate lunch that cost $8. That is unheard of cheap pricing in Maui!) If you understand what the KM is, and what it isn't, you won't be disappointed! Thanks to the staff at KM for helping make our 10th anniversary great!

Room Tip: Don't expect amazing oceanviews, it's quite nice, but not jaw dropping in anyway. Ask for a room that faces away from the road for more quiet.

Aloha! Happy 10 year anniversary! Thank you for such a detailed review!! We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Kauhale Makai and found that it fit all your needs while here on Maui. We (Maui Condo and Home, LLC.) are the rental management company for unit 627. The owners of unit 627 take much pride in their unit and have done many upgrades throughout. A few things in unit 627 have changed since your stay. Just last week the owners installed a wireless router and they also provide free internet so this unit now has Free WiFi. The owners have also added a TV to the bedroom as well as a new bluRay player in the living room. The cleaner for that unit is one of our best and our arrival inspectors check each unit before a guest arrives to ensure it is clean and everything is in working order.
We appologize that the bed was a tad to firm. If you had brought it to our attention we would have provided a matress topper. We have 24/7 on island staff to assist you.
Thank you for really going into detail about all the things you can find here at Kauhale Makai as well as South Maui. I found your advice to be very acurate and helpful. Thank you again for your review. Mahalo, the management at Maui Condo and Home, LLC.

Our room on the 3rd floor was clean and comfortable. Balcony access from the living room and bedroom. kitchen was very well equiped. If you have small children, the beach in front may not be for you ... lots of small coral bits making barefoot travel a bit hazardous. If you check in after the staff leaves (6pm), you have to enter an inner courtyard to access the elevators and rooms. All in All, we enjoyed our stay at Kauhale Makai. (We miss the roosters!)

Unit 429 is beyond what we had hoped for. Over $100,000 in renos and it showed. It was so great to come back to such luxury and still have an affordable vacation. The experience totally depends on your room, so don't judge by the complex. The complex was just okay, small pool, windy to sit at, but never busy. Right on the ocean. Our room overlooked a parking lot, to the grass and beach beyond, but the room itself was the highlight. So beautiful!

Room Tip: Try to find photos of the room, especially virtual ones. Then use trip advisor for help with reviews.

We had a wonderful time in this Unit. Great price, very clean, and very well situated for surfers. Very close to surf Hookipa or few minutes drive to the West side, Honolua Bay and all the surf breaks in between. We will stay there again.
