55 min drive to peak of Haleakala to see sun rose, cozy small lodge with basic amenities. You can hear cars driving to crater in the morning. Our room had no fridge, microwave or tv, we brought a cooler and got ice from lodge. Hours are limited in lodge for food and renting a room on the spot. Lofts make it nice for kids or friends willing to sleep on cushions to see crater at sun rise. excellent food, very friendly staff. Stay here for ease to see up country sites like Makawa, crater, winery, lavender feild and surfing goat in one day. One time stay for ease to see up country sites.

We took a morning drive to the crater and stopped here for lunch on the way back. We were the second couple there for lunch and were offered one of the worst tables in the restaurant. We were not excited by the menu or the prices. Our waitress was very nice but her coworkers were loud and obnoxious speaking of their messed up home lives.

I had heard that this was a "great" place to stay. The facility was average at best. The bed sagged and the bathroom was poorly appointed. Even the towels smelled badly. I have had better nights at hotel 6.....traffic sounds were awful. The resteraunt was fabulous. Here the food, the view and the staff were great. But....The store was staffed with very pretentious items and with stuffy, unhelpful staff.

After a late morning drive up the crater, we decided to stop at the Kula Lodge for lunch. The location is perfect if you want to stop in for breakfast or lunch after seeing the crater. I believe some tours stop here for breakfast after their biking down the crater.

The restuarant is rustic looking and offers a nice view out the windows. My wife and I both had simple hamburgers. They were ok burgers, but $15 for a so so Maui beef hamburger seems kind of high even for Hawaii. The service was very good though. They have a nice gift shop next door to the restuarant.

If we came back to Maui, we would probably return to the Kula Lodge restuarant just to try the other dishes.

My two sisters-in-law and I were on Maui for the recent tsunami. Upon hearing the first warning of a possible tsunami for the Hawaiian Islands, we got in our rental car and headed for Up-Country. We had visited the Kula Lodge and Restuarant several times in the past and felt that this would be a safe location to ride out the warning. We were looking for a public place, close the the road where there might be facilities available through the night. Arrived at Lodge around 10:00 pm to find an open and vacancy sign out in the front; however no-one around and phone calls to the Lodge resulted in an annyoyed voice saying they had no rooms and had no other suggestions for us. We spent the night in their parking lot along with many other frightened visitors, with no toilet facilities. I felt it less than hospitable to not open their doors for at least restroom facilities. Will think twice about visiting Kula Lodge on my next visit.....
