“Average hotel- AMAZING location”
Reviewed 9 March 2012

The nice thing in Maui is that all beaches are public. Ka'anapali Beach Hotel is located just down from Black Rock on one side and Whalers Village on the other. Older hotel, with tiny shower and horribly uncomfortable bed. However, the location right on the beach was AMAZING! Affordable beach chairs/umbrella was also available.

This was our cheapest stay on a 3 island vacation and we had lowered our expectations of the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel, but this place lowered them even more. Arrived at 11:30AM and our room was not ready and was not availble until 3:30PM. They said they would call us when it was ready, but they never did. We took our own bags to our room and were dismayed to find out that there were no elevators to our third floor room. Our room took our breath away, but not in a good way. It was in desparate need of updating, walls were paper thin, roaches in the bathroom and we believe the room's rug or AC made my wife ill during our stay. That night we had a pricey dinner for very mediocore food and had to wait 20 minutes and order twice for our first drinks. Service staff were not very attentive or particulary friendly--which was a theme of our stay.

We were shocked by other TripAdvisor reviews of their Aloha spirit and their claim as "The Most Hawaiian Hotel." If their claim is accurate, it is a sad statment about the Hawaiian people. We did meet others that seemed pleased with the hotel, but to us, these people would have been just as pleased at a tacky Las Vegas or Orlando hotel. As this was my wife's first trip to the Hawaiian islands, she was very pleased to learn and use the new words "aloha" and "mahalo." Suprisingly, both these words were lacking from the staff. We read about the staff's education in Hawaiian culture and their community activities, but their Aloha Spirit seemed forced at best. They did not smile, greet others, or intiate helpfulness. A great representation of this was our 8AM "goodbye" ceremony in they lobby that we arrived at 3 minutes late. They woman leading the ceremony sang good by Karaoke-style and gave everyone, EXCEPT US, a kiki nut lei. She then asked everyone, EXCEPT US, where they were returning to. We waited around for awhile, while she got into a conversation with the last group and I said jokingly, "You forgot about us." She flatly replied, "I didn't forget about you, you were late." My wife left in tears.

We will say the Aloha breakfast was nice and very informative. The story behind the canoe that the staff built themselves is touching. The nightly music and hula dancing were great. The drinks at the bar were potent and worth the price, which helped ease our disappointments.

We would have been better off getting a condo and fending for ourselves or a more expensive hotel because we would have gotten more for our money.

Room Tip: We have heard that the Lanai wing had been updated and is better than our run down Molokai wing.

We got married in hawaii and stayed for our honeymoon. This hotel was decent. We must have been in the "old " wing because the bathroom had no tub just a shower stall. The room was clean and the beds and pillows were actually really soft and nice. Beach was nice...you have to pay for chairs and umbrellas so keep that in mind. We paid for the buffet breakfast when we booked the trip and it was nice to wake up and just go downstairs for breakfast but its the same food everyday. Eggs, cold potatoes, mystery meat and fish, cereal, fruit...not a huge selection. We were very sick of eating it by the end of the week and the servers (all they do is bring u a cup of coffee and water) expect you to leave a 20% tip for doing basically nothing. The staff was ok...nothing special. I am not sure why they call themselves the "most hawaiian hotel". There are shows at night but after seeing one its enough. Location is ok...you can walk to whalers village and there are 3 good restaurants there...we liked Hula Grill the best. You can also catch the bus there and get an all day pass for $2.There is really nothing else in walking distance and if you ask the staff where a good place to eat is they act like no one has ever asked them before. They are also awful at giving directions so be cautious. I would not recommend eating dinner at the hotel restaurant...expensive and not very good. The tiki bar to go food was decent tho. Another thing is that we were probably the youngest people staying at the hotel and we are both 30...it is a much older crowd. Everyone was older than my parents. All in all, the hotel served its purpose but I wish we would have stayed somewhere a little nicer for our honeymoon. I would probably stay somewhere else in the future if we were to go back and pay a little more money. If you are on a budget tho and just want somewhere clean to stay this is a good place.

Room Tip: ask for the new wing

We stayed at the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel for 5 nights in February 2012. Our family of 4 booked one room with 2 beds. We have good friends who've been coming here with their families for many, many years because it's a great value and the hospitality is absolutely amazing.

We first checked in and received a room in the oldest (read: original) wing of the hotel. Yikes. We were on a first floor, partial ocean view room. The room was dark, the paint peeling, The bathroom tiny with no tub, just a shower stall. Not what we expected or wanted with 2 young kids. We politely asked for a different room (we don't like 1st floor for security/safety reasons and we wanted a tub to bathe our 2 young kids). After the second request, they found a way to move us.

The second room was great. It was in the newest wing. The lighting, paint, furniture, bathroom, were all very good. It was on the 4th floor so the view and light were great. If you stay here -- PLEASE ask for the new wing!

The main restaurant was good for the breakfast buffet. Nothing outstanding, but reasonably god food at a reasonable price. Even better if you book a package rate with vouchers included. The Tiki Grill offers fine pub food and reasonably priced and potent drinks.

The staff is truly amazing. As I said, they are polite, knowledgable, and genuine. They are open about sharing their culture and offer many ways for adults and kids alike to learn about it. They claim recognition for being the "Most Hawaiian Hotel" and from my dozen trips to Hawaii in 20 years, I would agree. Our kids loved the passport program where they got to collect stamps for learning and doing different things around the hotel.

The pool is tiny but is fine for young kids' entertainment for an hour a day, but it's definitely not a fancy resort pool. I'll be honest that with kids 6 and 8, I kind of missed that. The beach is steps away and an activities shack for snokeling & scuba trips sits on-property. Convenient!

Overall, I would recommend this hotel for couples and older (middle aged to senior singles) and young families on a budget. Also for anyone who values hospitality and value over fancy rooms and amenities. It might be just what you are looking for.

Room Tip: Ask for the new wing (can't remember the name but it's on the south side).
