I recently spent 3 nights at the Banyan Tree House in Makawao as part of a 2 week Hawaiian vacation. It was the perfect break between the beaches and resort life and allowed us to relax and enjoy nature, and sleep with fresh mountain air, rather than the standard aircon all night.

We especially loved the owner Marty who couldn't have been more accommodating as our host.

Will definitely be visiting again!!!

We were a family of four visiting Maui last August and spent 5 nights there. The place is quiet, it is a tropical garden wherever you look, well equipped, BBQ, swimming pool. We were in the Gardena cottage. The location is perfect to go to Haleakala national park and to visit North/North East places such Hookipa, Paiaa, Hana road. The rest of the island is easily accessible, distances are not too important.Banyan tree is 2 km from Makawao, quite typic and less crowded than other places, it is worth having something to eat there and assist cow boys tournament.
Marty runs this family property in such a way that your stay is relax, like the atmosphere in this island area. We received a lot of good advices from him, thanks a lot to Marty and his daughter for everything. We would definitively recommend this place.

We stayed here three days after four days in Ka'anapali -- what a difference! Very peaceful and quiet. We had an issue with the privacy of the room we booked (the place was fairly well-booked at the time), and Marty was happy to change us to another room. Nice salt-water pool! Only a half-minute from "downtown" Makawao, which is cute and has both a good coffee shop and four good restaurants (maybe more, we just tried four).

A couple of things to note: Like most if not all B&B's on Maui, there's no airconditioning (except the "Susan" suite, which you can get for a little extra). It's up-country and cooler there than down at the beach, but depending on the weather and time of the year, it can be quite hot. So just know this going in.

Also worth noting, Marty has a couple of houses for rent up the hill -- if you're planning on staying for a week, look into this option! It's quite remote and beautiful up there.

Room Tip: "Susan" room has optional airconditioning

Returned for my 3rd visit at this magnificent property. As always, owner Marty greeted us with aloha. How wonderful to just walk into your cottage - door unlocked, chocolates on your pillows! So serene. Love and always use the large saline pool and wonderful hot tub. Can't wait to see what delicious surprises await us in the early morning breakfast delivery. My favorite on island place to stay. Many mahalos.

I'm ambivalent about this property. The grounds and the pool are beautiful. The bungalow itself was fine. But it was hot when we were there and I sweated it out the first night. Also the breakfast is a joke. Muffins and yogurt from Target. It would take so little effort to make home made muffins or banana bread each morning and really upgrade the bfast. I would be willing to pay 50 bucks more.
