We've been taking vacations to San Diego for twenty years and stay exclusively at Humphreys. As soon as you walk through the front lobby to the pool area you have entered a lush, tropical garden with the sweet fragrances to match.
The room we always book is a suite that faces the marina. The balcony view of the hundreds of boats moored and gently swaying gives one a wonderful sense of peace and relaxation. The suite itself is large with a bedroom, living room, kitchen, dressing area, a double sink bathroom and flat screen televisions. The shower is marble and the kitchen and bathroom countertops are granite. The suite is large, airy, and bright. Recent renovations have made it all the more inviting although before the renovations the accommodations were just fine.
The entire staff, from front desk to house cleaning, has always been friendly, courteous, professional in attitude, and quick to respond to all you needs and requests, and kudos to the landscaping staff who do such an outstanding job maintaining the exquisite flora that adorns the entire site of the hotel.
We've dined at the hotel's restaurant on many occasions. It has always been a fabulous dining experience (the seafood offerings are to die for!). The restaurant also boasts one of the city's finest wine lists.
If your into music this is the place to be. Humphreys has a concert series that brings in some of the greatest pop music performers of today and yesterday. But, get your tickets early since they're sell out often.
The Shelter Island location is ideal since you can get to any of the city's attractions in about ten to fifteen minutes.
At vacation time it's always San Diego, and it's always Humphreys.

I have been staying at Humphreys for years and in the beginning it was hit or miss. I noticed a number of guests had some really negative things to say about the rooms and so I wanted to add my review to help provide some insight. Since Humphreys began renovating the rooms a few years back, I've now learned to always book the renovated room vice the suites which are a bit outdated. They have been completely redone and are both roomy and really comfortable. It's nice to come back to your room after a long day and just plop down on a big comfy bed or sit on your patio enjoying the bay breeze. The pool is nice and always clean and you cannot beat the room price & view. Especially in the off season. The renovated rooms have a large, flat screen tv, microwave, refrigerator and free high speed internet. They also have a mailing list where you'll receive great room package deals.

The customer service varies. Housekeeping and room service staff are among some of the nicest people I've encountered when traveling. (The room service menu is excellent by the way and the french toast is to die for.) The front desk can be a challenge. They frequently seem to be short handed or have someone a little inept working during the prime check in/out times and if the computer in the business center isn't working, there doesn't seem to be anyone on-site to help.

If you can get one of the renovated rooms, I would highly recommend chosing Humphreys for your next trip to San Diego. It's in a quite location on Shelter Island but only a short drive to everything San Diego has to offer.

We traveled to San Diego for a conference in mid July and all things considered, had a wonderful stay. The rooms were definitely renovated since our stay in 2007, when the pink and gold interior was a bit outdated.
If I were to go back and had to deal with small children (as we did) I would look for a lower level room close to the pool or putting green. Many of the upstairs rooms do not have a balcony, and having a place for the bambinos to run around right outside the door is one of the great treats of this place. In fact, the outdoors are why I would go back- the rooms themselves are acceptable, but not necessarily special. The grounds, as many others have stated, are perfect, and the pool is far above average, especially considering the price. We could have gone to the Grand Hyatt or W hotel downtown, and with kids, I would choose Humphreys every time.

The staff and junior suite not to mention the Concerts by the Bay were fabulous. The staff could not have been more accomodating to my son and I and the friends we traveled with. It is located central to everything and easy to get to Sea World, Seaport Village and the beaches. Our first stay but will go back again next time we are in San Diego. Hats off to the staff at this hotel.

I love this place. . The staff are very friendly/helpful and the rooms are very nice. The price is very reasonable. Great place for a getaway. I try to go there at least once a year especially for the concerts. I would recommend this place to all my friends and family.
