Description: A San Diego tradition since 1969, the Brigantine has received many accolades in our 40+ year history: "BEST SEAFOOD", "BEST CASUAL SEAFOOD", "BEST HAPPY HOUR", and even "BEST SWORDFISH IN THE WORLD", according to USA Today - just to name a few. Beautifully remodeled in early 2009, the Brigantine is well-known for the signature Clam Chowder, Grilled Swordfish, and Creme Brulee. The Brigantine is a favorite among locals for consistently fresh seafood, succulent steaks and grilled meats. Home to the America's Cup until 1995, Shelter Island is still the yachting center of San Diego. The Brigantine offers glimpses of this busy marina from the outdoor patio and semi-private banquet areas. The Point Loma Brigantine serves dinner 7 nights a week, and lunch Monday-Saturday. Join us for our signature Happy Hour.

My wife is smarter that I am. She had a top shelf vodka martini, which was perfect. I picked a $13 margarita which was so sweet I had to have the bartender fix it. His fix, add another $5 shot of tequila, which improved it but it was still too sweet. Any margarita in which you cannot taste the tequila is a bad margarita. This was a big bad way way overpriced margarita. Oysters? Good but very small. Calamari? Straight out of the bag and into the deep frier, just like cheap frozen French fries. Caesar salad: no distinguishable taste of anchovy. This is average at best food and overpriced for the quality.

Shelter Island is clearly a culinary wasteland. Therefore, if you want to choose a restaurant, you might as well first get drunk and then stumble into any random place. They are all equally bad. After a heated discussion with my associates, we deemed Brigantine the be the least offensive. Not sure, in hindsight, if we were right, but it did not not disappoint. The food was average at best with some weird combinations of flavors that do not necessarily work well together. I chose the shrimp tacos. Unfortunately, the shell was completely soaked and therefore gross. The seafood was doused in sauce and the fries were nicely wetted in slaw sauce. The octopus appetizer should not have had a sweet glazing and desserts seemed so mediocre that we unanimously skipped. Please trust me and don't bother. Did I mentioned it was also massively overpriced?

This is my last visit to the Brigantine in La Mesa . The food had way too much salt, butter and cheese, My Swordfish tasted fishy and my soup was very salty. I would love to have a good seafood restaurant in La Mesa but the Brig is not it; nor do I recommend it.

This restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside but the dining room is pretty and the food is great! The shrimp and cheesy bacon grits = heaven. Our server was attentive and we enjoyed an interesting Malbec.

Open seating, if there is a table available seat yourself. Menu is not extensive but what we tried was great. Clam chowder was delightful and the gumbo had the right amount of heat and plenty of surprises as far as protein goes. Mahi Mahi did not appear to be fresh but was enjoyed. Prices were ok, overall pleased with this choice.
