I spent three nights at Solamar while attending a conference at the San Diego Conference Center, less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The decor was funky, the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Valet parking was $40 a night but convenient as you could come and go as you pleased, as opposed to the lot across the street which required you to pay each time you re-entered. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Horton Plaza Mall is within walking distance, but also offers free parking for the first three hours. The hotel provides coffee and tea in the lobby in the mornings and wine in the evenings. If travelling by car, I recommend taking a drive to the Cabrillo National Monument (costs $5 to enter). It's about a 15 minute drive from the hotel and offers spectacular views of the ocean and the San Diego coastline.
