I stay in San Diego frequently for business so I am familiar with the hotel options (have stayed at the Hilton, Hyatt, Hard Rock, W). This hotel is my favorite for the location (next to Petco Park and steps away from the Gaslamp District), nightly wine reception, decor, room size and cleanliness.

The hotel is on the smaller size (along with the rooms), so I would recommend the Hyatt or Hilton if you are traveling on business and space is important to you (small lobby and rooms). My girlfriends and I stayed here for a concert at Petco Park. We enjoyed the wine reception, headed across the street to Stingaree (restaurant) and then walked over to the ball park. Everything was very convenient and perfect for a girls trip- plus we didn't have to worry about traffic going to/from the ball park.

Stay her if:
- You like boutique hotels
- Space is not your top priority (small lobbies/rooms but they are decorated beautifully)
- You like Aveda bath products
- You like wine receptions
- You like a "city" atmosphere
- You like to travel with your four legged friend (they are a pet friendly hotel)
- You want a good pool scene in an urban setting

Don't stay here if:
- Space is your top priority (stay at the Hyatt)
- You want to be on the water or want a water view (stay at the Hyatt or Marriott)
- You like large hotels (stay at the Hyatt, Marriot or Omni)

My husband and I were looking for an inexpensive get-away to San Diego and got a great price on this hotel! We were only staying 1 night so we took the city bus from the airport and walked the 4 blocks to the Solamar. The hotel was in a great location and the rooms were beautiful. They have a complementry wine hour in the lobby and a coffee service in the morning that was excellent. We toured the Midway the first afternoon-totally worth the 17.00 admission fee! The next day we took the water taxi to Coronado Island and had lunch before our flight home. Had a great time for a song-we would recommend this hotel to anyone. The pool is small with no hot tub-we didint use it and it was largely abandoned during our stay. The only problem we had was with internet access. The morning of our departure we could not connect and was told the hotel was having issues with their computer system and to call their support number.

My husband and I planned a last minute trip to San Diego after getting good airfare. I had never booked with Priceline but gave it a shot. When we got the Hotel Solomar, I was only nervous because it wasn't the familiar Omni, Marriott, Hyatt chains but with a four star rating, I assumed it had to be in line with them. And the price was right for sure.

The hotel is very chic and modern. The rooms are nice, but as couple posters have said, no dressers and that is slightly inconvenient if you have a longer stay as we did - 5 nights. But beds were comfy.

The best part of hotel is staff. The front desk staff were amazing. Even when we had minor complaints or maybe requests, they tried to be as accomodating as possible and never made us feel they were put out.

We did move once because we stayed during Halloween and a loud street concert was going on right out our window. They moved us to 10th floor which they didn't have to do. The view was amazing. City, litte of the ocean.

Right now there is some construction going on at properties near the hotel. The only time it even bothered me was during the weekday by the pool. Hard to relax with the construction noise.

Valet parking is pricey ($32) but if you go in and out a lot, its probably worth it than trying to find public parking.

So much is within walking distance. Restaurants, Petco Park (for summer events especially), nice mall.

All in all, I would recommend the hotel. I have heard that some rooms experience noise from the pool bar but I would think it would have to be extremely busy for that to happen. And yes, some ocassions they do close the pool to guests to accomodate a private party which does put you off a little. They only did that once during our stay so we didn't mind.

The morning coffee and tea and the afternoon wine is a very nice extra touch as well.

Go and have a great time!

I generally love Kimpton hotels, and Hotel Solamar is no exception. The hotel is beautiful, clean, comfortable, and in a great location. The staff are gracious and cordial. There are many amenities that truly make staying at a Kimpton a great travel experience. Hotel Solamar offers free tea and coffee in the lobby every morning, and free wine for an hour in the evening. There is free wireless in the rooms. The bathrooms are luxurious with great toiletries. I would definitely plan to stay there again.

We had the pleasure of a 5 day stay at the Solamar while attending a conference in San Diego. We traveled with another couple and they echo our experience. We arrived hours before official check-in time, but received our rooms immediately. During our entire stay the staff was courteous, professional, and always assisting. Housekeeping service was efficient and excellent. The 4th floor roof top pool/bar is wonderful!! A great place for a relaxing drink in the evening with a view of the Gaslamp district. Never really saw anyone swimming, appears to be more of a social gathering place for guests. The hotel location cannot be beat. Walking distance to just about everything including the convention center and the Gaslamp district which is full of restaurants, shops, pubs, etc. You dont need a car if you are staying in this district. We took taxis to/from the airport and San Diego Zoo, very reasonable taxi rates. The hotel has a free wine tasting every evening from 5p to 6p, very nice. Free coffee in the lobby every morning for 3 hours or so.
The decor is wonderful, if you like W hotels, you will like the Solamar. The hotel was spotless as far as cleanliness is concerned and the hotel is well maintained. Great down bed comforters and pillow. A room with a view of the 4th floor pool/bar deck was nice. Although the hotel really doesnt have a bay view, you cant beat the location, ambience, and service. This would be a great place to stay for a romantic couples retreat. Highly recommend this hotel and we will stay here again when we return.
