We were in the Madison Suite. Quiet, cosy, thoughtfully decorated with lovely touches, the 1871 House is located in a terrific UES neighborhood with a wine shop, small market and news stand all right around the corner. There's nothing like coming 'home' to 'your' brownstone, unlocking the doors and slipping into the foyer, closing the day behind. Our beds were deep and well made and we slept like rocks. The rooms with gorgeous high ceilings, wood floors and kitchenette made us wonder why anyone would want a 'big box' hotel. Immediate, personal email responses from the 'team' made our reservation process delightful.

Room Tip: ANY mobility issues, lower floors only. Stairs are beautiful but they are considerable.

This trip to NYC my friend and I decided it would be fun to stay in a brownstone in the Upper East Side and it was fun albeit - as many reviewers have mentioned - lots of stairs to get to our room but we knew that. We stayed in the Rear Library. It was spacious, extremely quiet (this was fantastic for a good night's sleep) and having the kitchenette is such a convenience. My friend had the queen bed and I had the twin bed set up for me and it worked out fine as I am only 5'4". The bathroom, as is the case of most bed and breakfast rooms, was small but it had lots of shelving for our toiletries which is a good thing for two women traveling together. As far as the 1871 House goes, what I think is fantastic about it is: location, location, location - it can't be beat. Close to Central Park, Museum Mile, Rockefeller Center, too many to mention, restaurants, shopping, etc. - the location can't be beat if you love staying in the Upper East Side, which I do. Very great location for catching a cab, which is what we used in addition to the car services we used. Zoe, the guest services person at 1871 was very helpful, friendly, very accommodating. Because this is a bed and breakfast, the office hours to check in are very limited and if you don't arrive within that limited time period, you will need to access the B&B by a lock box on the front porch to obtain your key. Some people may not be comfortable with that - others are very comfortable with that process. All in all, we had a great trip to NYC to enjoy all it has to offer during the Holiday Season and it was fun to stay in an authentic Upper East Side brownstone.

I knew before our arrival we would have stairs to navigate and haul our luggage up - one must be prepared for and comfortable about this aspect of staying in an authentic brownstone. If you are not, pick a room on a lower floor.

Just returned fro a wonderful visit to NY with my 21 year old son. We stayed at the 1871 House and had a terrific experience! The staff was very helpful and accommodating and made several helpful suggestions for places to eat. The 1871 House is a perfect destination for folks looking for accommodations with character. I'm sure I will be back!

1871 House is a find! We had a large, spacious studio -- huge by NYC standards. Our bed and linens were comfortable and cozy. We also had a couch for lounging, a table for dining, and a kitchenette.

The location is excellent -- situated near Lexington, Park Ave., 5th Ave, and Madison Ave. 1871 House also felt very safe.

The management was so accommodating and gracious.

Thank you, for your kindness and hospitality!

We spent 6 nights here in October, staying in the Madison suite of rooms on the 4th floor. Great location, just a block or so from the subway and two blocks from Central Park.
The staff was very kind and helpful.
The rooms were FANTASTIC. We had a ton of space and a great little kitchen where we could store leftovers or make ourselves breakfast in the morning.
One note: the bathroom tub did have a leak, but the shower worked fine. A plumber came while we were there, trying to fix the issue.

Also, very important, there is no elevator; we walked up and down 4 flights of narrow stairs each time we left or returned. This didn't bother us, but people who have difficulty climbing stairs would definitely have a problem.

We will definitely be back in NYC and 1871 House will be our first choice for all our visits.
