We took our two teenage boys to NYC for six nights. Stayed at the Wellington Hotel (check review). Got there early evening. Went straight to Time Square. For the first time this was amazing and busy. There were lots and lots of people you could barely walk around. Lots of police around so we felt very safe at all times. Food is very expensive and having two teenage boys to feed is even more costly. Went to little Italy for dinner - its not as great as it sounds - all it has are restaurants on a street. The food was okay. Just off times square there is a street called restaurant row and that had better Italian food. Visited Moma and Museum for Natural History. If you have been to Paris and seen their museums then don't bother with Moma because its a waste of money. Museum of Natural History was also a waste of time - some of the exhibits were closed and you had to pay extra add ons to see the things that would have likely been interesting. Went to the Intrepid Museum and this was excellent. Saw the space shuttle on display and the concorde (the kids loved this). Went to HiLine for a walk - its an elevated railway converted into a walk way - it was interesting. Chelsea Market had only a hand full of bakeries which were very good. There is nothing else in there. But the building inside is neat to look at. Macy's and Bloomingdales - department stores - good shopping but not cheap deals if you are looking for any. Century 21 department store - if you are looking for a good bargain this is it - that's if you are accustomed to rummaging through item after item to find that deal. Stores like American Eagle, Billabong, Quick Silver they all have the same things we have at home and prices are the same. The 9/11 memorial was neat to see including the new world trade centre, wall street, stock exchange etc. We did the Circle Line cruise for 2 hours and that was great and informative. You can buy your city passes from the circle cruise line counter. We stood in line at the tkts booths at times square and got tickets at half price for War Horse and Jersey Boys both excellent shows. The line ups were not bad about 45 minutes but it was worth it and it moves fast. Bought a 9 day pass for the Metro and got excellent use out of it. All in all it was a really nice holiday. Got to see a lot. Shopping was expensive and disappointing. Food was very expensive. Weather was excellent. Very very overcrowded.

Went to the Hotel on Rivington for New Years. DON'T DO IT! The staff was helpful however the overall experience was horrible. The tickets were expensive, which is expected for New Years in New York. However I felt scammed. When we arrived at the hotel there were two lines. One for people who had tickets and another for people who did not. The line did not move. We realized that with a VIP ticket you could cut the line. So we decided to take advantage. They would only let 2 of us in at a time as if it were a regular night at a bar and not a paid New Years experience. People were pushing and agitated (understandably.) Once we got in the place was PACKED. There was no room to move and people were pushing once again, had to have been a fire hazard. You could not reach the bar and there was really no where else to go. The VIP ticket got you a wristband to go upstairs. So again we waited in a line where people pushed and got angry. Two of our friends even got thrown out, apparently we did not pay to be there. Finally we reached the elevators to get upstairs and they were slow and one was not working. Once we got upstairs it was a mess, garbage and shattered glass everywhere. The was one accessible bathroom per floor. Getting to the bar upstairs was just as difficult. Although we made the most of the night, it was a horrible experience. Will never go back! DO NOT make your New Years plans at the Hotel on Rivington.
