WE stayed at the Andaz the week before christmas and had a pleasant stay. The lobby to the hotel is very discreet indeed, location is excellent if you want to be central in NY. After reading all of the other reviews before our visit I really expected excellent service and to be wowed by this hotel, unfortunately I were quite dissappointed!! The check in was very quick and she took us to the room and explained how to close the blinds etc. We were not told that tea/coffee were free all day in the lobby and also a glass of wine or too on a evening (I only remembered as had read this on reviews on here and mentioned it to staff the following day to confirm it). Also breakfast is not self service so you get 25$ per person per day to spend but they charge you for the drinks and orange juice (approx 9$ for these).

There was a problem with the heating of the shower and the first day it were very cold so we mentioned it to staff in the lobby and they turned up the temperature which made it too hot so the next day mentioned it again! An engineer came to the room and said they had had a problem with the boiler but he said there was also a problem with the mixer in our room so made an adjustment to it. The following day it were cold again and so the engineer were called again and finally resolved it. We came back to the room to a bottle of wine and some fruit from the Manager with a note apologising for the inconvenience, we were also offered tickets to see the Radio City Christmas show but unfortunately we had made other plans and had already seen the show (this was a nice touch) and then on check out they did not charge us the costs we had accrued from room service. So I must say they well and truly made up for the inconvenience of the problems with the shower.

The rooms are of a good size, the bathrooms are enormous and clean. The drinks and snacks were replenished every day.

Overall this is a nice hotel, just a dissappointed by the service of the lobby staff!!

Room Tip: Don't pre pay for breakfast this includes the awaken package (we included this) it's not worth it, loads of deli's near the hotel were you will get better value for money!!

I was tempted to try this hotel after a fabulous experience at the Andaz property in London.

I have to say, the property exceeded my already high expectations - this was driven not just by the room and the hotel itself but by the service I recieved.

Unlike other hotels, the checkin process is personalized, so your host at checkin looks after you for the entire stay. My hots Joe and also Dana went above and beyond the call of duty on several occasions incluidng booking a restaurant for Christmas lunch and finding a hair stylist for me.

I was upgraded at check in to a large Andaz suite, which has a separate sitting room and a small balcony. It's styled like a loft apartment and I couldn't have been happier. rooms come with a small hidden kitchen with a friedge, microwave and dishwasher which makes life easier on longer stays like mine. the suite is clean and modern and a little of a shock perhaps to those who are used to plush and overwrought rooms.

the size of the room was perfect when I had NYC based friends over for drinks before we hit the town.

The complimentary minibar (with non alcoholic beverages) is a real plus, all products are sourced from nearby suppliers. and how many times have you been caght out by a $5 bottle of water or a $4 coke? no problem here.

The bathrooms at the hotel have come under great scrutiny because of their unique design. Being a bath tub lover, I was a little put off, but became a convert to the spacious rainfall shower set up.

Free wireless and the evening drinks in the lobby make up for the lack of a club floor (when you are a single female traveller, these club floors are great).

I ate breakfast daily in the restaurant, The Shop, which has a small but interesting breakfast menu using locally sourced produce.

I can't impress again how accomodating and helpful the staff were which was accentuated by their knowledge of their city. This makes a real difference to your stay and really differentiates the hotel from other, larger ones in the vicinity.an interesting difference at Andaz is the staff all have multifacted roles - doormen, hosts, concierge. so it's a one stop shop if you need something.

Speaking of which, this is the perfect location - steps from the Public Library, a short walk to Lord and Taylor, Macys and at the other end, the glitzy boutiques and stores of 5th Avenue. Those in a showtime frame of mind, it's a short walk to Times Square and all the hubbub there as well as Broadway. Grand Central is around the corner, do check out the market there.

Room Tip: Opt for an andaz Suite...they are larger

first time in new york and this hotel was perfect. we looked out on the public library but could also see the lights of time square in the distance and the empire state building if we went up to the end of the window. such a fantastic location and the hotel was sleek and modern without feeling stark or uncomfortable. in our room at least the mini bar in the room had spirits and lager which you paid for, and juice, soft drinks and snacks replenished daily at no extra cost.
luxury feel to the shower room and fluffy towels, bathrobe and complimentary slipper things. the lift was controlled by your card as a security measure and there was usually someone on the door. there was also a safe in the room. staff were friendly and very helpful. downsides are small really, would've liked tea and coffee making facilities in the room and after long days on foot, a big old hot bath would have been a luxury but these two quibbles didnt spoil our fantastic time in this utterly fantastic place. ps felt totally safe in new york even on the subway - if this is a consideration for you dont let it stop yoiu going.

Room Tip: some rooms obviously have better views that others and the facilities may vary, we only saw our room.

Booked our 15th wedding anniversary Thanksgiving weekend trip with our 7 year old daughter after reading reviews on Trip Advisor. We had a King suite-view of 5th Avenue and The New York Public Library on the 6th Floor. Wowed by the discreet entrance and anti-lobby which kept other tourists out of OUR hotel! Check-in smoothly transitioned to an amazing loft style feel of a hotel room with great use of space and windows for the best views! Extremely comfortable beds with the most luxurious bathroom. Everything at the touch of a button from the blinds, lighting and television. Extremely clean room and bathroom. Loved the footbath /rain shower combo. Room service chicken noodle soup a must! Restaurant in the Andaz on 5th and coffee we indulged at breakfast. Amazing location and worth every penny! Lauren you were our favorite staff member! Grand Central around the corner and romantic Bryant Park!!! Perfect location on 5th avenue and a great launching pad for any adventure in Manhattan!

Room Tip: King Suite 5th Avenue rooms for the best views

My wife and I spent 10 nights at this hotel at the beginning of December 2011. I must say that this was one of the top-10 stays we have ever had anywhere in the world. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful, not artificially friendly as is the case at most U.S. hotels. The Andaz 5th Avenue is also a very clean and modern hotel, and has a certain "coolness factor" attached to it. It does not quite provide the same amount of buzz as, say, W Hotels, but if you like the W Hotels, you are very likely to like this hotel as well. The complimentary evening wine, free wi-fi, and free snacks and drinks (not alcoholic ones) in the minibar were very nice extras.

The hotel has a superior location next to the NY Public Library to explore Manhattan and the many department stores and shops in Midtown. The closest subway stations are just a block away. We were very self-sufficient travelers and did our home work carefully before the trip, so we did not really get the chance to test the concierge skills of the staff.

The sleep quality at the hotel was excellent - an excellent, very comfortable bed and a silent room sufficiently far away from the elevators. We intentionally selected a room not facing 5th Avenue / 41st Street, and this turned to be a very good decision in terms of minimizing the amount of street noise in the room. Well, this is still New York, so bringing ear plugs with you is never a bad idea.

Our room was sufficiently big for this kind of long stay with separate spaces for a bedroom and living room. The bathroom was, like the rest of the room, big, clean, modern, and well-maintained. The decoration and overall design of the room was fairly minimalistic which is great if you like modern Scandinavian style design.

We never had a breakfast at the hotel as there are plenty of delis in the neighborhood. We did enjoy an excellent dinner at the hotel - very fresh, local, organic ingredients and attentive, professional service. The hotel also has a very cool restaurant/bar downstairs. Worth visiting at least for a couple of drinks in the evening.

As said earlier, the service at the hotel was very good, but not 100%. The key hiccups took place prior to our arrival at the hotel. The hotel web site clearly provides an e-mail address on the front page. However, nobody ever responded to my questions/requests sent to this e-mail address. When I called the hotel, the staff were sorry about this, were able to help me and address my requests on the phone, and then provided an alternative e-mail address for future questions and inquiries. Well, this does not exactly address the key issue - why bother to have an e-mail address on the front page if that is not the right one or if there is nobody answering customers' questions there...? They also forgot to clean our room once, but came to clean it immediately when we called the reception. So, no harm done, but a couple of suggestions for improvements here.

All in all, a great, fresh, and slightly different hotel concept. We also liked the fact that the staff in the reception area possessed multiple roles acting as receptionists, doormen/doorwomen, concierge employees, and waiters/waitresses. This worked well in practice and resulted in the staff being more integrated with the customer service processes.

Room Tip: Rooms not facing 5th Avenue / 41st Street are likely to be a safer choice in terms of minimizing the amount of street noise.
