Having notified the hotel that we would be arriving in the evening at the time of booking AND having received notification that our booking was confirmed we were extremely disappointed to hear that our room was not ready when we arrived at 11.15pm! We were offered a meal (which we declined as we were beyond eating as it was 4am by our clock) and a drink and waited another hour in the Umami bar. At 12.15am our room was still not ready! The reason given was that many guests had stayed on due to the bad weather further south. We were offered a room with apologies for the TV not working and told that we would receive a credit for the night. The missing TV was not the problem. The room (444) had the hotel's air conditioning unit directly outside the window - in fact you couldn't see out of the window due to the machinery. The noise was unbearable - it screeched all night and so the next day we made out feelings known to the front desk. A really charming employee apologised, explaining that in fact our room had been sold to other guests the previous night due to the storm! She told us that our bags would be moved to another room while we were out for the day, and as a measure of good will we would be upgraded. The employee told us that our bags would be moved after 2pm and all we had to do was to ask for our new keys at reception on our return. We returned to the hotel at 5pm to be told that our room was not yet ready! Having expressed our dissatisfaction with this the receptionist dealing with us referred to her colleague next to her. This colleague said there was nothing that could be done about the delay in the room being ready. Having explained what her colleague had told us in the morning she rather rudely told the young woman dealing with us that if we didn't want to wait we could forego the upgrade! At this point I lost my sense of humour. The second receptionist argued with us, stating that the appalling room we had been given the night before was the room we had booked. When I pointed out that that particular room was unsaleable due to the incessant noise from the screeching mechanics outside of the window and that the fact the TV didn't exist was of no significance, the rude employee stood her ground insisting that that had been the room that we had booked. She did not give herself a chance to actually listen to what we were saying, she was so defensive and beligerant and failed to grasp quite what a PR disaster she had embarked on. Miraculously another room was found, we moved our bags ourselves and moved into the new room which was absolutely fine.
The rest of our stay was without incident, the hotel was clean, comfortable and in a perfect location. We had no problems with any other staff, they were all friendly and polite. On our departure we mentioned the night's credit that we were offered and the hotel taxes were reimbursed.

Room Tip: Make sure you avoid the fourth floor airconditioning unit outside.

We stayed in a Deluxe Studio room, Weds-Sat. I hadn't read reviews about the size of the rooms beforehand but the Deluxe was pretty small so glad we had a bigger room. I couldn't have afforded to do this without the Secret Escapes discount that was on.
The hotel has put a lot of money into the lobby and the various bars, which shows. The drinks are the usual overpriced products you find in cities of course, but they are cool spaces to sit in. The daily Facility fee (watch out for that!) which you pay on top, includes $10 credit to use in these bars to further promote them. But to be honest, they could do with investing in the practicalities of the rooms themselves. I've stayed in nicer hotels for less.
There was nothing wrong with our room like some of the pictures on TripAdviser. However, the rooms are clad in dark wood and with limited daylight as it is, the rooms are quite dark. There are no coffee/tea making facilities. We were also next to some noisey generators. The wood and white leather chairs look like a good idea but they don't wear well and the room looked grubby and didn't feel clean. For an upgraded room, the bathroom was very basic and the shelves clearly needed cleaning - towels (which had stains washed in) had just been replaced but nothing wiped down. The hinges were rusting as well.
Our room wasn't available at 9pm when we checked in either - not ideal. However we were given $50 credit and went and had dinner while it was 'cleaned' which worked perfectly for us.
If anyone likes the look of this hotel I'd recommend staying somewhere else that's nicer and more comfortable for less and just going to the Hudson bars for a drink to enjoy the hotel that way. The rooftop bar has great views.

rooms dark and extra small, terribly noisy, corridor like in jail, bar and libary like an icebox - overall no place to feel well - after 30 years of buisiness and private trips to many destinations in Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe and America, I never saw such ugly hotel!

We sincerely appreciate your review lorenzs481 and apologize for the challenges you have faced. With our hotel being once a woman's dormitory, the design concept that was created in keeping with our history was to become a college campus for adults. We do offer several different size rooming categories and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future so you may experience them for a more enjoyable stay.

The room was a bit small, but for the price we paid it was worth it. It’s also conveniently located 2 minutes from Columbus station and Central Park.

The breakfast was not that bad and the vibe on the roof top is great. I would definitely stay there again the next time I’m in New York.

With just about the tiniest bathroom I have seen ( even in NYC) I still felt the room, amenities and the comfort of the room were great. Lobby, courtyard and roof top bar area are nice additions! While there is no coffee in the rooms you have many options close by.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less street noise.
