Having notified the hotel that we would be arriving in the evening at the time of booking AND having received notification that our booking was confirmed we were extremely disappointed to hear that our room was not ready when we arrived at 11.15pm! We were offered a meal (which we declined as we were beyond eating as it was 4am by our clock) and a drink and waited another hour in the Umami bar. At 12.15am our room was still not ready! The reason given was that many guests had stayed on due to the bad weather further south. We were offered a room with apologies for the TV not working and told that we would receive a credit for the night. The missing TV was not the problem. The room (444) had the hotel's air conditioning unit directly outside the window - in fact you couldn't see out of the window due to the machinery. The noise was unbearable - it screeched all night and so the next day we made out feelings known to the front desk. A really charming employee apologised, explaining that in fact our room had been sold to other guests the previous night due to the storm! She told us that our bags would be moved to another room while we were out for the day, and as a measure of good will we would be upgraded. The employee told us that our bags would be moved after 2pm and all we had to do was to ask for our new keys at reception on our return. We returned to the hotel at 5pm to be told that our room was not yet ready! Having expressed our dissatisfaction with this the receptionist dealing with us referred to her colleague next to her. This colleague said there was nothing that could be done about the delay in the room being ready. Having explained what her colleague had told us in the morning she rather rudely told the young woman dealing with us that if we didn't want to wait we could forego the upgrade! At this point I lost my sense of humour. The second receptionist argued with us, stating that the appalling room we had been given the night before was the room we had booked. When I pointed out that that particular room was unsaleable due to the incessant noise from the screeching mechanics outside of the window and that the fact the TV didn't exist was of no significance, the rude employee stood her ground insisting that that had been the room that we had booked. She did not give herself a chance to actually listen to what we were saying, she was so defensive and beligerant and failed to grasp quite what a PR disaster she had embarked on. Miraculously another room was found, we moved our bags ourselves and moved into the new room which was absolutely fine.
The rest of our stay was without incident, the hotel was clean, comfortable and in a perfect location. We had no problems with any other staff, they were all friendly and polite. On our departure we mentioned the night's credit that we were offered and the hotel taxes were reimbursed.
