Stayed in a mini bunk room with my ten year old son on the tail end of our NY trip. It was absolutely perfect for what we needed--a clean place to crash that was well-located. The room is TINY, but who really needs space? We were just there to sleep. The beds are the most comfortable I remember sleeping on in a long time--I mean, ridiculously comfortable. The pillows were something akin to down alternative, not the hard rocks so many hotels have. The room was quiet although we did use earplugs due to the traffic (we were on the 11th floor). The bathroom was modern looking, spotlessly clean, and had a good amount of room to move. The shower is very nice. The glass between the bathroom and bed is only slightly frosted, so you will not have a lot of privacy. Our bathroom door didn't slide shut all the way--I'm not sure if this was the design or if ours was just broken. Wifi was free and fast enough. We had an in-room safe. Our room had some very nice views including the Empire State Building, which was beautiful at night, all lit up.
We originally reserved a double room the night before for $155, choosing that over a mini bunk for $140. We got there early and asked if we could check in, and they told us that they only had a mini bunk available. I agreed to take it because we wanted the room early, and I asked if they would refund the difference. The clerk replied "there is no price difference" which clearly is not always true. This was annoying, but it was also nice of them to allow us to check in early, so I let it go.
The other thing was mildly annoying is that we had been really excited about the rooftop deck that is advertised. Unfortunately, the rooftop deck was commandeered by a restaurant and is essentially a huge rooftop bar. Not a place I can hang and look at the lights with a ten year old.
Every member of the staff including front desk, concierge, bag check, and housekeeping was friendly and helpful. Can't say enough about them.
In the neighborhood, we ate at Giuseppe's (right around the corner, Lexington between 39th and 40th), Bagel Express (next to Giuseppe's), and Shake Shack (3rd and 40th).
If you are reasonably low maintenance and appreciate minimalism, this is your place. I have already recommended it to friends and would definitely consider staying here again!
