Description: Russian Samovar, a landmark restaurant in New York City with rich history, started operations in 1986, and later partnered with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Nobel Prize winning poet Joseph Brodski. We are proud to have won numerous Best of New York awards for our food and flavored vodkas. We support the art community by hosting poetry readings, art shows, and now theater productions. The space has a unique layout with private event space upstairs, which consists of a lounge area and bar, and a private dining room with a balcony. Downstairs is an open dining area and bar with an atmosphere celebrating our Russian heritage. The white piano centerpiece donated by Mr. Baryshnikov ties together our bar with our dining room, and is one of our sources of nightly live music - everything from classic piano scores to Russian / gyspy music on a weekends, as well as jazz on Sundays.

This was My Lady and my first visit to a Russian restaurant. Russian Samovar was conveniently close to the Gershwin Theater across the street for which we had tickets to see Jersey Boys.

We were seated at a table too small for us to comfortably eat so we relocated ourselves to a table more in the center of the restaurant that gave us the needed comfort.

We each ordered from the Pre Theater menu and opted to start with the country borscht which was excellent. We also ordered the beef stroganoff which was very good. While the taste was excellent, the beef was slightly tough. The pirozhki that was served with the beef was excellent. For dessert we ordered the napoleon, which was about average.

The wait staff seemed somewhat confused and uncoordinated. We had to repeat ourselves several times when ordering and then someone else’s order was delivered to our table.

The piano music added an enjoyable touch to the evening’s dining experience. While we enjoyed our first Russian restaurant as a very good experience, next time we’ll eat Russian at a different venue.

If you enjoy smoked fish and flavor infused vodka, then this is your spot. The vodkas are made in-house. My friends who are fans of these staples loved them. For those who want other options, the other menu items are on the peasant side of Russian food (kasha, potato pancakes) and are prepared very simply.

We have been there many times over 20 years or so. Food and entertainment are always good. Lots of Russians sounds and people dancing. However, this time nothing about the service was good we asked multiple time to get drinks, order food, get water, and get a bill.

Enjoyed a great dinner after our Broadway show. Like normal we got the Siberian Pelmeni and it was very good. My daughter also got the borscht soup and she really enjoyed it. For entrees I got the chicken Kiev which was good, but a little on the dry side. My daughter got the duck and my husband got the short ribs and they both really enjoyed their entrees. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. I think they did have a little difficult with things since they were expecting a large birthday party and were getting it set up.

Stop by Russian House for a Pre-Theater drink at the bar. Love the service, drinks and the atmosphere. We ordered Pelmeni Strognoff (chicken). It was beautifully prepared with amazing taste. Will definitely return for dinner at our next NYC visit.
