Before you can enter Hangawi, you are asked at the door, to exchange your shoes for straw slippers. When your feet have complied with this request, you are shown to a low traditional table, where you can slide your legs under or sit lotus style.

The food is Korean vegetarian. Beautifully and creatively served, in clay pots abound full of delicious vegetables and tofu.

The atmosphere is serene, with soft music playing in the background.

Hangawi Is an amazing & fun experience with vegetarian food that will delight everyone’s palette, including carnivores!

I love the old school style of dinning. You remove your shoes at the door and sit at a low table with your feet dangling below. The staff were very polite and knowledgeable about the menu. We ordered so much good food, we were full for hours afterward. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and one hot stone pot to share. For appetizers we got sesame leaf tofu patties, fried vegetarian dumplings and combination pancakes. The fried dumpling were my favorite dish of the night. For the main dish we shared the avocado stone rice bowl. The combination of flavors were amazing! Our waitress added the miso flavoring at the table, which added to the atmosphere.

Excellent atmosphere with amazing food. Great service. You get seated in sunken pit tables. Shoes off at the front. Food is fantastic. Large selection. Service is fast and polite. Reservation is recommended. From the outside the restaurant looks like a club. No windows and solid doors. On the inside it is a very nice tranquil restaurant.

Its hard to find vegetarian Korean food but to find a whole restaurant is amazing. We all had different stone bowls (Avocado/Vermicelli/Todok/Tofu) which were all excellent. The rice crisps up in the bowl which elevated the texture. We also shaerd the fried veggie dumplings and the stuffed eggplant. Finally the blueberry cake and soy vanilla ice cream which a great ending to the meal. Highly recommended when in NYC.

We wanted a restaurant near the Morgan on 36th St. and found this interesting restaurant. Its $25 fixed price lunch appealed to us. We had salads, dumplings and the tofu steamed broth. Lovely presentation. Chocolate tofu ice cream was quite good.

What I didn't like was the hostess. She was in a rush to get us to take our shoes off. We didn't know what to do and she barked about leaving our shoes on the floor vs. putting them in the boxes. I was so pissed off at her that I said, "Listen,, lady, we have never been here before." so she backed off. Management should teach her how to deal with the public.

The other waiters were quite nice.

The ginger tea was delicious. The mango drink was beautiful to look & delicious to drink but it was $14.00.
