Description: The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

The restaurant is a very small but quaint place. The escargot is superb, perfect balance of garlic and liquid to sop up after eating the perfectly cook snail. Unfortunately, the bread was the only bad thing in the restaurant, chewy and rather tasteless.
The tuna tartare was presented beautifully and the taste was succulent.
For main course, the artisanal pasta with truffles (chicken added as per my wife) was delicious. My lobster cassoulet was a perfect balance of fish and spices. A wonderful bouillabaisse!!!
The flourless chocolate heaven was excellent.
Other than the bread, this place is a keeper.
Prices are very reasonable for NYC in midtown near Times Square.
Will definitely return

Made reservations for me and my boyfriend before our Broadway show. Had a lovely experience at Chez Josephine. We got great seats right in front of the piano. It could get a little loud. Tables are very close together so you can hear what your neighbors are saying. The place is very busy. The service was excellent and quick. I think they are used to the quick turn over since people are trying to catch shows. We had the steak tartare, roasted red & golden beets, rack of lamb and fillet mignon everything was delicious.

When you walk in you feel like you are teleported back to the 1920s. The ambiance was festive with the opulent décor. It's on the expensive side. It is a fun and classy dining experience without having to really dress up. With so many restaurants in the theatre district Chez Josephine is definitely worth checking out. 4 stars!

We had a good dinner here. The fried oysters were very good. The duck was very good. The crab cakes were very good. Escargot was average. The fried chicken was not a good choice.. it was below average. Desserts were good. They had a piano player who played continuously while we were there. He was good.

Simply the best eggs benedict I have had in living memory. The best surprise is that the three course brunch came with a choice of appetizer (Lobster Bisque or Smoked Salmon, two other main course choices of either French Toast or Spaghetti Bolognese (apparently Ms Baker's favorite) and a coffee with a dessert of profiteroles in chocolate. All this for $19.26. My Bloody Mary however was $14.00 but delicious and mighty. The service is outstanding and the re staurant is an eccentric and beautiful riot of Josephine Baker related theatrical decor. A wonderful experience and I must return to have dinner there.

We had a delicious dinner at Chez Josephine. My husband had shrimp appetizer & tender lamb entree. I ate a salad & tasty shrimp. I have food allergies - dairy free or gluten free is no problem. Everything is well seasoned & artfully presented. Wine, dessert, & coffee topped it off. Meredith reserved a nice table & made sure we had a lovely evening. Jazz pianist & the piano/clarinet duo were entertaining. The waiters were attentive & served promptly. ChezJ is close to the theater district & 42nd St bus Port Authority. We will be back!
