“Best Views Ever - Lakes Galore!”

Reviewed 9 August 2017

This is an amazing hike. Get an early start 8-9am. Take at least 2 bottles of water. Rated as medium strenuous. You'll climb up for a while but you'll see 5 lakes as you continue to climb. So it's worth it. As you approach the top you'll be above tree line and the rocks are red and dark black - volcanic and pumice like. You'll see the backside of Mammoth ski resort. Take plenty of water, snacks and enjoy : ) (Not the best hike for under age 6 kids unless you are going to carry them.)

See all of Mammoth in one spot. The Minarets. Check. Lake Mary and multiple other lakes. Check. Crystal Crag. Check. Backside of Mammoth Mountain. Check. Amazing views and crystal clear waters and falls. This is a must if hiking in Mammoth.

We took the gondola up and then hiked down the 7 mile trail. There were fantastic views the entire time. Make sure you bring plenty of water and sunscreen with you.

I've done this hike many times, most recently last week. It's a good day hike, from Lake George, with a steep uphill section. You feel it, but it's really a moderate hike. If you go past the fork for Crystal Lake, to the Crest, the number of people drops off a lot. You keep ascending and get into the John Muir Wilderness at an area full of iron-rich reddish cinders / pumice, from an old volcanic eruption. If you follow that path to the top and stay to the right, you easily cross over to the plateau right above Horseshoe Lake. It's extremely beautiful, with 360 degree views - and you get cell phone service since you can see Mammoth Lakes and are right across from Mammoth Mountain.

Started fairly early. Much easier to get a parking spot. Parking is limited. You walk through mostly forested areas, winding up the switch backs. Then you get a beautiful view of Mary, George and TJ Lakes below. Shortly you will see a sign that says Crystal lake or Mammoth Crest Trail. Keep going to the right and wind up more switch backs. The higher you get the more it opens up. Once you get to a big open area, you can either keep to the right, this basically goes straight up. Or you can keep to the left and drop down a few feet then back up again to the Crest. The views go on forever in all directions. Beautiful and well worth the grunt up the trail.
