The Lightner Farmhouse
Ranked #9 of 23 Gettysburg B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 11 August 2017

This was our second trip to Gettysburg, first time staying "downtown" and we found the Lightner Farmhouse to be a much better choice offering a quiet respite from the tourist traffic yet still a historic property. Located approx. 3 miles from town, it is close to the Visitor's Center and a short drive to the Battlefield. The Hoover family were gracious with their hospitality and generous with their time. We especially enjoyed Eileen's short lecture on the Lightner home's history. Breakfast was excellent; better than expected. The entire farmhouse is a step back in time with spacious grounds to explore, pleasant common areas to enjoy, and comfortable accommodations. One of the best B & B's we've stayed at.

My wife and I stayed this past weekend and visited the Battlefield and other historical places. When we arrived we found this historic home to be very well kept and the grounds to be well manicured.
The owners, Eileen and Dennis, and their son Jason, were outstanding hosts. It reminded me of visiting my grandparents. Eileen explained everything we needed to know and was very knowledgeable about the history of the house, which was used as a hospital after the Battle of Gettysburg. Dennis showed us some artifacts from the Civil War which were found on the property.
There were three common areas to include the parlor, dining room, and another gathering room in the basement. All of the guest rooms have private bathrooms. There was plenty of literature about the house and the area that were available to read. We did not have time to see the grounds but I wish we did. You can walk through fields and woods to get to a stream behind the house.
Our stay was quiet (aside from a thunderstorm). The bed was decent and the room and bathroom were clean other than excessive dust in the ceiling and fan areas and some stains on the bathroom walls. This would be the only negative I could say about our experience but certainly would not keep us from coming back.
As for breakfast the food was outstanding. Jason and Eileen made sure everything was prepared hot and on time. I had an egg strata one day and nut waffles the next day. My wife has special dietary needs and they made sure her food was prepared gluten free. This attention was much appreciated as it is not always available in many hotels.
Security is important to us and this B&B was very good in this regard. The parking area is well lit and the front door is kept locked. All rooms are individually keyed.
We rarely get to go away without the kids so we were very happy to have a nice base camp for our exploring. If you have any interest in history the entire area is a great destination.
Speaking of history we were lucky enough to have a Union reenactor give us a short presentation before breakfast. His stories of his own relative who fought in the Battle certainly enhanced our visit, and as a descendant of Civil War soldiers myself I appreciated that Eileen and Dennis had him as a guest.
In summary we had a great experience and would certainly visit again. The weather was unusually cool for August which made it even better and Eileen saw us off with a hug which once again brought back nice memories of my own grandparents.

This is a Beautiful, Authentic, Civil War Farmhouse. The property and house location is perfect, 10 minutes away from downtown Gettysburg, but far enough away to have peace and relaxation. The family that owns the B&B do everything they can to make your visit memorable and comfortable at the same time. Breakfast was delicious and we were so full, we didnt eat again until dinner. We enjoyed the talk given by our hostess on the history of the home and of Gettysburg. As we had never been there before they helped by giving us ideas of what to see and do. The room was spotless and very comfortable. Did i mention the porch with the rocking chairs???? Just to sit there after a long day touring Gettysburg, with a cup of tea was what a vacation is all about! When we go back to Gettysburg , we will always stay here! We have now stayed at the best and wont settle for anything else.

Room Tip: Loved the cedar room!

We are so glad you enjoy the B&B for the same reason we do- peaceful setting outside town but close enough to get there in a few minutes! Sitting on the porch is a popular warm weather past time as well. Thanks for the kind words and we look forward to seeing you again. Remind me to bake chocolate chip zucchini muffins for you!

Absolutely wonderful from the time we walked in until the time we drove away! We couldn't ask for a nicer "family!" The stories, history, and recommendations were an added bonus! Accommodations were very cozy and comfortable! Our breakfasts were superb - gave us a great jump start to busy days exploring Gettysburg! We will definitely stay there again!

My husband was interviewing for a job in Virginia and at the last minute I realized we could easily swing through Gettysburg on our way back to BWI airport. It would be a blitzkrieg trip, just one afternoon and the following morning but not knowing when e would again have the opportunity I canceled our last hotel night in VA and did a quick search for B&B accommodations. I honestly didn't look at anything past the location, ratings and the price, all good and a few clicks later it was done.

We arrived and were given a tour by Eileen and Dennis and shown to our room. Both were very hospitable and knowledgeable about the area and the history of the farm house. I was delightfully surprised to learn the farm had served as a field hospital during the battle at Gettysburg. After grabbing a couple of cookies and some blessedly cold bottled water we set off on our driving tour followed by dinner. Our room was spotlessly clean, equipped with everything we needed, including a private bathroom (something I'd forgotten to check for in my hurried booking). W did miss our king sized bed but such is often the case in many B&Bs. Breakfast was tasty and our only regret was that we were unable to actually sit back and relax and take in the beautiful grounds. But history beckoned so back to Gettysburg we went.

The Lightner Farm was such a lucky find for us! Close to town, the museum and all things Gettysburg and yet it doesn't feel that way at all. Very pleasant. As my husband was offered the job in Virginia, less than 90 minutes away, we are happily considering when we might return with time to sit in a rocker and relax.
