Bosphorous Restaurant
Located in the Govans area it is a few minutes south of northern parkway and York road which has seen some redevelopment . Unfortunately the area around the restaurant has not. It is located in a non-descript building on York road. Although not quite a dive it is close. We made a reservation on open table for 7 pm on a Friday. When we arrived we were the only patrons. The waitress greeted us and we were seated immediately .I did note that there were a few tables with reservation signs.
Service was excellent. The waitress was attentive and helpful. The meal was excellent. We started with stuffed grape leaves and fried calamari both were very good. The main course was a chicken kebob which my wife enjoyed and the eggplant stuffed with lamb, beef and tomato. This was also very good. It is only available on Friday.
Not a fancy place but the price was right, service and food both good.

When we saw the decor of this place we almost left -- it looked like we were minutes away from a mid-1980s college bar party, complete with cigarette-burned banquettes and black painted ceilings. When we realized it was a hooka bar we almost left, but the waitress assured us hookas didn't fire up until after 8 p.m. Glad we stayed.
The waitress was adorable and efficient, and recommended the hummus, which was wonderful -- not super garlicy, which gave it a nuttier richer flavor. The pita that came with it was better than usual, and I dont' know why. Unfortunately, asking for veggies to go with pita threw the kitchen a bit, but they came through with some giant carrott sticks, delivered in a martini glass. Kinda cute.
Drink prices and selection took me back to the 80s as well, long island iced tea and fruity rum drinks abound, for very small prices.
We were there for an early dinner, though, and both got kebabs. The recommended chicken kabob was tender and perfectly spiced, and the rice was also extra flavorful (again, don't know why -- kitchen magic?). The shrimp kabob held it's own with perfectly cooked large shrimp with just the right amount of char to keep them moist while giving them a little smokey goodness. The side salad was fresh and lightly dressed, and a perfect accompaniment.
The sent us a frozen fruit sundae, chunks of frozen fresh fruit topped with an amazing delicious scoop of strawberry ice cream. We were stuffed, but it was too good to leave behind.
We got out of the place before 8 p.m.,when hookas come out and I suspect a younger crowd takes over.
All together, it was a great meal at a great price, we'll be back.

If you like Greek fare, you should check this place out. There's free street parking after 6 PM which works well for this location. I love phyllo dough and this restaurant had some unique preparations. We didn't visit on a Friday, so we couldn't try the eggplant, but it sounds wonderful. We did try the hummus, which was well seasoned and served with plenty of warm pita. The manti was also quite tasty and not something you typically see on a menu. The baklava was perfect and not overly sweet which sometimes ruins it for me. The cocktails were reasonably priced and strong. They could have used more staff, it seemed as if only two people were working, the chef and the bartender/waiter.

The appetizers were good. The chicken kabob with rice and a salad was a special tonight for $9.95. Nice menu with lots of variety. The service was warm and friendly.
Unpretentious setting ...good food.

Served by the enthusiastic and friendly owner, our every request was fulfilled and even unrequested needs met. Food presentation was good and served timely. Quality and quantity of food was outstanding. This is not a special occasion restaurant - nor does it try to be; instead I could see this entering our lineup of restaurants regularly visited. Bonus: Order a Toss pizza (outstanding pizza!) - located next door - for the kids if Turkish isn't their thing.
Note the restaurant's location may concern some - though was not for us. Convenient off-street parking in rear should mitigate many concerns.
