Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

Significant Savannah figures lay to rest here (The Telfair family). I can't believe it took me five years to finally visit this historic marker. More importantly this place is breathtaking with the Walz monuments, Live Oaks, and heirloom Camelia plants. My adventure would not be the same without my tour guide Bonaventure Don (, a master walking encyclopedia, who can create a narrative of leading figures in the city in their best and worse moments. The monuments and Spanish Moss are suspended in time and you get to walk in its beauty. I am certainly go to return.

One can see true wealth when you look at the monuments made for the dead. The richest of Savannah are on display. Beautiful landscapes , iconic sculptures and the sounds of birds singing. Lucky to see the azaleas in bloom.

We toured Bonaventure this week. It is very interesting. Be sure to get a map and find Johnny Mercer's tomb. Also, drive to the back and park by the river for a nice view. The tours are great if you are really interested.

We sauntered through on a sun-kissed day. The views of the nearby river are the highlight, along with the Mercer tombs.

Centuries of history among beautiful landscape garden. You can visit on your own but we toured with Tim Rowell owner of Dash Tours-Bonaventure Cemetery Tour. Tim is a 6th generation “Savannah family”. He walks you through the oldest area and has lots of stories mixed with the history to make this tour well worth every minute. He’s a great host as well!!
