The food was average quality but the space was attractive although upstairs above the State Street conviviality. The place looked great from the street but the food was not as good as the promise.

We enjoyed our mail quite a lot. The food was in our opinion authentic, compared to the poor imitation Mexican food we get at home in The Netherlands. The setting is average but they tried to make it cosy in a modern boxy building. The location is stimulating on a crossroad with lots of roadside cafes and plenty of students. Would certainly consider a second visit.
By the way, the total amount paid was quite reasonable, 48 dollars which included quality margaritas

We ate at Casa de Lara again recently, and were pleased to note that the quality of their food had not diminished one bit in the intervening years since our last visit. The prices were also quite reasonable - particularly in light of the very hearty portions. One downside: the service, though friendly and helpful, was quite slow. The restaurant was not packed, so the reason for this is a mystery. It took twenty minutes for our order to be taken - even with menus closed and laying on the table - though the food arrived in good time by comparison. The second-floor location makes it difficult for folks with mobility issues. There is an elevator in the building, but we did not seek it out so I can't say how convenient it is.
Casa de Lara was a pleasant experience overall, and I recommend Casa de Lara for anyone who enjoys a taste of reasonably authentic Mexican cuisine.

Overpriced for the quality. Very slow service. They offer a bucket of 4 Coronas on their drink menu for $10. Sounds ok right? Until they bring you four 7 oz bottles. Did I mention the slow service? The food was mediocre at best. They don't mention tomatoes on most of their items, but then they pack them full so they can skimp on meat. If you eat here, don't plan on doing anything else on State Street because you might be there all day. I always want to say something good in a review, so I have to say they have a good location. It wasn't very busy when we went there today, I wonder what took them so long? (Perhaps cutting the tomatoes)

Seated right away before the big Cinco de Mayo rush. Provide water and menus, chips and salsa immediately. Then, we waited. And, we waited. And, waited, as we watched others get their drinks and meals. Finally, a waitress approached and asked, 'have you been helped'? If we are seated in your area and you haven't helped us, IT SHOULD BE PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT WE HAVEN'T BEEN HELPED! Our food took far too long to send out, and the wait for our check followed the same pattern. If they were more efficient, they could have turned our table at least twice, as we watched the line to be seated grow and grow. I blame the management, mostly. Figure out how to staff, especially on a day you know you'll be busy. Paying a little extra for staffing on a night when you have a number of new customers will pay off in the long run. Skimping on staff, instead, on this same night, will hurt you in the long run. Some people may never return.
