Interesting place, convenient to downtown restaurants. Cabins are very small and baths are smaller. If it was just my wife and I it would have been fine, but we also had my mother in law who has mobility issues. The stairs to the cabins are significant and not always level or of even height. The proprietors were great and very helpful with dining and finding attractions. My only real complaint personally is our shower hit me low in the chest and there wasn't enough room to back up and bow. I am 6'3".

Room Tip: Ask for the cabins up the hill. Easier access and newer.

Stayed here for 4 nights, wonderful experience. Clean and comfortable cabins, great for a family. Hosts provided great recommendations on places to visit and clearly care about their tenants. Would absolutely stay here again!

Gracious hostes, vey accomadating and give great local history of the town and sites to see in and around Custer. If you are a rock hound Ann will defiantly send you a good location to hunt for rocks or pan for gold. The cabins make a good central spot to go see all the spots and is very easy to find. Cabins range from small to the Hunting Loges. They have a hospitality cabin and hot tub.

Room Tip: Call ahead , they book cabins fast. The town is nice and quite and wildlife can been seen often from...

I hesitated to rate this property with 5 stars since it is basically a modest facility in which small cottages are grouped closely together- but staying here was one of the nicest experiences of our memorable trip to South Dakota. As noted by other reviewers, the owner Ann is extraordinary- gracious, warm, a wonderful source of advice about the area; she made us quickly feel like friends rather than customers. Our cabin (#10) was 'cozy'- meticulously clean with a nice eating area (built-in table with banquette seating) and small but functional kitchen (microwave, two burner range, very small refrigerator and sink with pots/dishes/towels). We appreciated the effective heater during one particularly cold September evening. Though the Shady Rest is barely 2 blocks from the center of town (and one block from the Mickelson Trail), it is quiet; we sat on our little porch and watched visiting deer. (There was also good TV reception, Wi-Fi, a hot tub, and hot morning coffee).

Room Tip: Tell the owners your needs and follow their advice (about this and everything else).

Ann was super helpful. We ended up in two cabins because we reserved late. She was super helpful and considerate about the changeover. We stayed for 3 nights. One in cabin 4 and two in cabin 3. Both cabins were clean and great. Cabin 4 does have a full kitchen which was nice. Ann gave us good pointers on restaurants and local activities. The location was central and perfect for our destinations. Mount Rushmore and Wind Cave NP.
