Description: The "Kapetanova kuca" restaurant is situated on the most attractive location on the Mali Ston waterfront. The name was derived and chosen as such due to the fact that it was the centre and dwelling place of the Mali Ston Guard Captain. The "Kapetanova kuca" was opened on 1 September 1986 and back then it was a family tavern. It is owned by Kralj family, one of the oldest families in Mali Ston. The restaurant offers specialties of the Mali Ston Bay exclusively, and includes a large winery of Peljesac wines.

My husband and I were given the recommendation to stay here by the owner of a hotel where we stayed in another area in Croatia, saying that this was by far the best restaurant in the Dubrovnik area and that they had great oysters. The restaurant is located right next to an oyster bay, where the oysters are farmed directly in the sea. Many areas are famous for oysters, but I have to say that these were among the best we have ever had. We had them raw (absolutely fantastic), grilled (very good) and fried (too much batter). Afterwards we had a squid risotto with a mix of seafood, and this was one of the best dishes we have ever had anywhere. Excellent. The service is very good and professional. If you speak with the waiters you will have a better experience as they are very proud of their food and are happy to explain everything to you. To finish they recommended a local cake they make that includes pasta. Very original and different. They do not take reservations and the place fills up rather quickly. We went for lunch and got there around 12:30 and there was still space, but we tried going back after a few days at 2 pm and could not get a table, so the earlier you go the best chance there is to get a table.

All this time I was convinced that this is the place. The owner (chef) is a tv star and one of my favourite chef's. Unfortunately when we came to the restaurant it was not as expected. The waiter was very unfriendly, he didn't give us the right suggestions or explanations that we have expected instead we felt like a number on a factory line not like guest.
Ambient: nice but a bit dated...
Staff: waiter didnt give us a choice what to eat he specifically told us what we have to eat. Not good at all. He was cariing food like potato sacks...
Food: the fish file not clean well, the smell and bitter taste of old seafood in my mouth because one side of the file was not taken off. Sorry mrs. Lidia but you know better then that... The salads are in the wrong dishes too small, impossible to mix after you add your dressing.
Prices: to high for this area but not there fault...
Do I recommend???.........I don't know....

Being in Dubrovnik for New Year, we started to look for dinner options on 1 January. Many good places around and in Ston were closed and we decided to go to Kapetanova kuca, after nearly 10 years. What started as lazy rainy evening turned into a rhapsody of taste. Started with pate as greetings from the kitchen, over Kapetanova kuca risotto, oysters which were super fresh and then fresh fish. All food comes with their domestic vegetables and olive oil as well as local wine. This restaurant is in top 100 in Croatia since 1996, and with all right to be there. Chef Lidija Kralj is not tired yet. Everything is topped with very good service and homey Christmas-style atmosphere. I was delighted!

We visited Ston on a day trip whilst staying in Dubrovnik and stopped here for lunch. We ordered mussels for 3 (as everyone else in the restaurant seemed to be eating them) and an octopus salad. We got a HUGE dish of mussels to share cooked in different ways (onions, garlic, white wine, parmesan, tomatoes) and cooked beautifully.
