Climb up from the rigt side of the hotel and you get a North Carelian view that has inspirated many Finnihs artists: painters, writers, photografers... like Eero Järnefelt, Juhani Aho, Pekka Halonen, I.K. Inha, Jean Sibelius.
No matter what time of the year, it is worth climping.
Tip: Take your place, focus your camera and wait for the blue moment.

Great routes for hiking. Great houses for rent, easy access to top scenery from the Ukko-Koli hotel. Finnish scenery at its best.

Lake Pielinen means Lake by the Edge. Pielinen is one of the largest lakes in Finland, being more than 200 km long. By Pielinen, ancient sacred Lake of North Carelia, is Koli, also a sacred site. Koli is the tooth of ancient mountain, before last ICE age there were two mountain chains in East- Finland; Carelidian Mountain and Swecofennidian Mountains, both of which were ground down by 20 km thick ice. Now only the core of one of mountains remains being Koli. There is a sacred well as welll as a deep rift just approximate to the visible white core of mountain, these sites are sacred and a custom is to offer silver items into that cleft or rift, which is being extremely deep, once the ice pressed on the mountain, the rock split leaving this deep crevasse. There are also caves and several findings of ancient cliff paintings around.
The view is beautiful, you can see over the Russian border and see the marshes where bears and wolves linger. Lake Pielinen is rich in fish and there are still a tiny population of the rare and secretive, endemic species of seal. The Lake is deep and by the cliff walls lures a rare type of pike-perch having a magnificent colorful backfin. The Finnish name is Harri, and this fish a very good to eat.
At the top of the Ukko- Koli ( He-Koli, Mister Koli, Ukko being the ancient pagan main god) is some facilities; a place to grill, you buy the firewood in the close by information center and there is an exhibition, a shop with locally grafted goods in wool, iron, wood and others.
Koli can be hiked like we did, but also by car and a tram/ elevator. In summer time one can take a boat from Joensuu and enjoy Finnish lake landscape.
Area is vast and transportations are the ones you arrange. Hire a car or a motorbike so you can get further north and enjoy bear and wolf safari. Hire a cottage in the wild, avoid the touristic “ Koli Holiday Village”.
We hired a Lodge, a lake and a boat with firewood for one week for 220€, far in the wild by Jänisjärvi. It was fabulous to hear wolves howl in the night, We had a bear just behind the lodge, We did not see him, only hear and saw the fresh paw marks. Northern lights light the skies, we had a fire in the fireplace and warm sauna accompanying plunge in the lake. Plus up from “our” hilltop we could see Koli in all his majesty!
There in one tourist information point and one food store in the area,
I warmly recommend the different guided walks!

I visited Ukko-Koli for the first time. I has been on my mind for awhile now and finally I had the chance to visit it. I was really worth it. The scenery is awesome and easy to reach. Also the surrounding area is beautiful.
Near the Ukko-Koli hill is the hotel and nature center where you can shop and eat
