While in Anchorage this past July 2017. For 2 week land / sea tour. Had the opportunity to visit the Alaska heritage center as one of excursions. As we arrived at the center we were amazed of the information available. From demonstrations on native games, music and art. The young Native Alaskan people are very proud as they tell their native history. There are crafts available for sale that were handmade. They had a village in outdoor area of native homes to explore. The whole experience was amazing. Definitely would recommend.

For anyone coming to Anchorage, this is a wonderful place to visit. One part is a living, outdoor museum which superbly showcases the different Alaska Native cultures and the types of dwellings they live in throughout the state. These vary widely, depending on their location in Alaska. There are guided tours which run often throughout the day, and at many sites there are guides who explain the different structures and tool used in those regions.
Inside the main building there are regular performances of Alaska Native dances and songs, also representing the different cultures of the State, as well as demonstrations and stories of the different native groups throughout Alaska.

Take a half day or at least a couple hours and visit the Native Heritage Center-it's so worth it. There is a free shuttle bus that leaves from the city center.

We attended a conference outing including food and Alaska Native dance performances. Displays give an excellent introduction to the different Alaska Native communities, philosophy and history.

We enjoyed the program here and workers were very friendly and helpful. We had caught a cab to get there and found out by employees that there was a free shuttle which we enjoyed having. There was a tip container but gladly paid that rather than a cab.

This center does an excellent job depicting the 11 different cultures that have lived in Alaska for the past few centuries. There are examples of the domiciles the natives created to live in a harsh climate. Each of these was manned by someone who could explain how the home was used. And, some had examples of hides, 'furniture' and artwork. The museum has nice displays of some of the garments used in ceremonies. In the theater, there was a live demonstration of some of the games played. A great place to learn about Alaska's native cultures.
