My first night in the Vegas area I set up base at the El Rancho in Boulder City, within easy driving distance of the Hoover Dam. I found the El Rancho to be a pleasant stay. Decent rate and free Wi-Fi. My only qualms were the fact that the walls felt a bit thin, and there was no breakfast of any sort. (In this case I thought that was okay! The front desk steered me toward The Coffee Cup, which is right down the road and which serves really good food.)

At one time, I am sure this was one of the best motels in the area. That was then and not now. From the street it looks nice. Inside the rooms; not so much. In addition, I attempted to cancel a reservation 24 hours ahead because I finished my business in Las Vegas about five hours ahead of time. It would have been extreemly convient for me to arive at my next stop, Phoenix, ahead of time. I was told that they would charge for the room anyhow. They have a three day cancelation policy. I even offered to pay a $25 cancelation fee. The desk called the owner. She would not budge. So, I stayed. I said I would write an online review, and here it is.

The beds are hard, like a piece of plywood with some foam over it. The furniture is dated to the age of the building, circa 1950. It smells musty in the rooms. Another reviewer said it was a $40 room with an $80 price tag. I put it as a $50 room with an $80 price tag. I would not stay here again even if I did not have the bad experience with not being able to cancel my reservation. In addition, the motel was only about 1/4 full. I am guessing that this motels aging, and declining reputation, is not helping its business.

On the positive side. Mel's is an old Cafe from the 1930's that serves outstanding breadfasts and lunches. I first asked a local where to go. Mel's was his recomendation. I second that recomedation.

Room tip: Find another hotel. I have good luck with Best Western.

no breakfast but they have good koffie.
The rooms are very clean and the staff are friendley
boulder city is a good starting position to go to Vegas or the Hooverdam.
you sit in this motel just far enough from the main road so it is nice and quiet off.

Traveling in late July through Nevada is not a time you want your car's air conditioning to break down. That's what happened to us, and when we walked into our room at the El Rancho Boulder Motel, it was so wonderfully cold, we didn't want to leave. We had a one bedroom suite with three double beds--each of our two children had their own bed. The motel was like a page out of the 50s, grounds included, and it was well kept. It's a very short walk to a small, affordable, and tasty restaurant (right next door). Downtown is quaint and within walking distance. Make sure to stop at the National Forest office for information on what to do nearby. The motel staff made a recommendation for an affordable and honest mechanic and also was able to book us for a second night without making us move out of our room. Very accommodating.
