This is a pleasant walk up the hill over the quaint town of Skofja Loka. The signs outside fill you in on the history of the place, which has been the site of castle fortifications since the 900s. There are two ruined castles on the property, but the main event is the huge building that now houses a museum. We were warmly welcomed by the guide at the front desk, who gave a lengthy explanation to my friends in Slovene about the rich history of this place. Sadly they've run out of money to fully restore the chapel once used by bishops and Ursuline nuns, but what's there is lovely. They've put a lot of thought into the exhibits, covering everything from early Slovene language, to the life of Austrian aristocracy to local sports heroes. There's also a war section -- a reminder that this castle was occupied by Germans in WWII and later used as a prison for German POWs. In the garden outside, we ran into several wedding parties and a group of young boys touring the old farmhouse exhibits. Time well spent. Although many of the signs are in English, you'll learn more if you understand Slovene or come with someone who can help translate and explain the history.

There is plenty to see in this lovely old castle and museum and it gives the visitor a real flavour of the history of this part of Slovenia. There are also regular visiting exhibitions, often of local modern artists.

I repeated the visit and it was good idea. Collections are similar as years ago but they are refreshed. I saw interesting entrance room with souvenirs, memorial rooms dedicated to writer Ivan Tavčar, exhibits of different guilds and products from the area with different ethnographic description. They have some older paintings of Ivan Grohar and film about Passion play in the cellar. It is just a short walk from the middle of the city up to the castle. You can admire nice view.

I enjoyed the town of Skofja Loka! It was very pleasant indeed! The Skofja Loka Castle & Museum is certainly something that you should take time to visit when you are in the area. However, I was expecting a little more from the Skofja Loka Castle. I greatly enjoyed the history and views from the castle area, but what I enjoyed even more than this castle was the walk up the hill and through the trees/forest to the three old castles that lay in complete ruins! Those were amazing to me. They should have more info about this "castle walk" inside Skofja Loka Castle.
